Hello all,

I am kind of new to the world of the VTX and new to this site. My first bike was a 87' Suzuki Savage single cylinder 650 that I rebuilt from the ground up. There is obviously a drastic difference between the bikes and now I'm not really keen on working on a V-Twin. I own a 2004 VTX 1300 C and I am having an issue (1) with with a non responsive throttle which tends to take more time than desired to warm up before rides. Once it warms up it seems to do fine and will run on the crack of a whip, but when running at a high rpm and let off the throttle is tends to sound funny...kind of like a cough and small backfiring. This could simply be my inexperience with a bigger engine. My thoughts were maybe it needs a carb adjustment or possibly just a tune up. It does have aftermarket pipes (not sure of brand) that were on the bike when I purchased it. Another issue (2) is that there is a slow leak right above the choke pull. This area I believe is called the pet**** (at least thats what Ive been told) where the adjustments for the gas tank are (on, off, reserve). It is a bronze(ish) color and seems to drip on the choke pull. I attempted to tighten the screws that were there but it didnt seem to make much difference.

I realize I am new here and have written a short story, but if someone would be willing to donate a few minutes to my issue I would greatly appreciate it. Cheers!

the gas valve may need to be replaced there are some aftermarket ones out there.

I assume you bought the bike used with the pipes already installed now most make the mistake of rejetting with just pipes and if they did they put smaller than stock jets in can give an almost 100% on that.

Don't use the choke, if it won't run after feathering the throttle a bit just reach down and turn the idle up, CHOKE FOULS PLUGS FAST.

Check your plugs if they are BLACK on the electrode and center you need to replace them then ride some and recheck if they are now white you are to lean.

Here is the link on how to set up the carb.

Welcome Sasq ! The popping backfire might be because of A/F screw needing adjusting or...you might want to tackle a mod or two to help it breathe a bit better. I'm sure there will be a couple of folks here like Charlie D that will toss a few good suggestions your way. Tons of folks here that are very knowledgeable, read up a bit and you might find an answer in previous post or other thread.

The small backfiring sound could be the pair valve working...You can't really hear it with the stock pipes, but aftermarket ones make it alot more noticable...Most folks just remove the system, and install block-off plates...
