I have not yet decided on what color vtx to get, but I have seen some pics of bikes that have some parts blacked out. Don't get me wrong, I have seen some bikes with chrome everywhere and it looks great, but I am a little bit too OCD to have that much chrome. Depending on the color, will change what parts to black out so I am not sure which parts to do yet. Who has blacked out what parts, and how is it done? Do you get the parts powder coated black ( flat or gloss ) or do you have them painted using the same paint that you'd do a fender or gas tank with? I know I don't want to do everything blacked out, but some things would be nice.
Also would this be a possible mod to do to the pipes? I know the heat would be a big factor, but if the motor can be blacked the pipes should be able to be blacked too. Also as part of that how short can you cut the pipes and not have exhaust in your passengers face when 2 up? I ask because while chrome pipes with a chrome wheel as a back drop look good, I don't think black pipes with a chrome wheel would. I will have to stare at the vtx longer to see if I would do the pipes but since I am pondering it now I thought I'd get the info.
Thanks

Believe it or not, I've been thinking of the same thing. I'm in Florida, so one little sprinkle of rain=30 minutes of wipe down. My last bike was a Suzuki m50 Black. Everything was black but the handlebars and the exhaust pipes. If only I could do the same to the X. I have seen black handlebars and exhaust at some bike shows, but couldn't find the owner to get more info.
I'm sure someone here knows something about this.

What part of florida? I am in the tampa area, more specifically in riverview, just south of brandon. I know what you mean about the rain, plus with the sun just walking up to the bike could blind you with the sun reflection.
If the solution is powder coating I was thinking of doing a different color. Black for the motor with just the tips of the fins still silver, but on the chrome stuff maybe a dark titanium gray, like the color available on one of the vtx models but a darker shade so it's not the same color. I am thinking that all black would be too much, but if you could go a shade lighter, like a dark shadow color it wouldn't be BLACK everywhere, but would still look good. maybe a flat black in powder coat would give the effect, like the hlmet made by ICON, it's a flat black but has a grayish shade because it's flat and not glossy.

Now thats a &%$#@ing sweeeet bike. I thought that much black would look odd, but with the parts you chose to accent in red it sets it off.

Right on, I have In-laws that just south of the first light east of 75, behind the subway/gas station at that first light.

Love the idea of a bike done completely in flat black. Shiny Chrome just seems too showy for an everyday bike. Chrome screams:" LOOK, LOOK, LOOK AT ME. I'M FABULOUS!!!"
Flat black states:"WHAT THE F%^& ARE YOU LOOKING AT? I DON'T KNOW YOU & YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ME."

Speaking of which...I scoured the net last night looking for resources on the black out process. "X", can you talk about that a little? IF I wanted to black out my engine and some of the chrome, how do you do it??

Doesn't the black slow it down a lot? I'll bet it would look great in all RED.:D

No, no.
Fire Engines are slow too.
and Flames can be a 'slow burn'.
Think 'after the light switch is turned off.'
Wasn't it Mic Jagger who said: "I see a red bike and I want it painted black..." :bleh:LOL!

Do It!! Buy a black bike and make a plan to black it out piece by piece and stop when you like the chrome accents you have left. Or... never stop -
