I just went for a ride after completing Clayton Mod on my 1300R. I was really wanting some cobra speedster longs but just didn't have the $$$. I joined VTX CAFE two days ago and found a thread 'bout drilling the factory exhaust. I was very aprehensive at first but after reading so many post I decided to go for it. I went with 6, 7/16in. holes in the outer plate and 1 deep. I am SOOOO happy right now

Don't put that drill away yet. I got money that you'll drill deep again. Add one or two more into the baffle. The rumble is intoxicating.

I could only find two places to drill the deep plate. I did drill out the center hole as well but did not notice any difference from the original Clayton. Anyway I liked the CM but wanted a little louder so decided to do the deep. Tried to go 3,6 & 9 O'clock but could only drill two about 5 & 7. Still do not really notice a difference from the original Clayton Mod. Any Advice? Would going to say 9/16" make a difference?

This is my first bike. Where, what size hole, and how far do I drill to do this mod. I have not even done the clayton mod so if someone could tell me where to start from the begining that would be awsome. Thanks for any help.

Personally I would forget about drilling the stock pipes and buy some hard chrome or cobras. The clayton mod sounds better than stock, but won't compare to after markets expecially when accelerating heavy.

Has anyone done the exhaust mod on 1800c in here. Was thinking about doing it, but kind of looks like a pain in the ass.

I just bought a VTX1300 (didn't even pick it up yet), but I know the pipes are too quiet. I'm interested in this mod...

Couple questions. What is the exact procedure for drilling the holes? Do you just drill the outer cover, or is there some deeper drilling required? Any issues with backfire or other tuning (rejetting, etc) required?

I like it loud, but I love the stock pipes (at least for now). Looking for an easy mod to get some good sound without being too obnoxious. Any tips would be appreciated. Are there step by step instructions/pictures anywhere?

Here is a video of the Clayton Mod. I just did this to my 07 1300R. I first started out with 6 1/2" holes thru the 1st metal plate in both pipes. After I rode around for about 10 min. I decided it just wasn't quit as loud as I wanted it, so I drilled deeper thru the second plate in the bottom hole of both pipes. Sounds great. They say the more holes, the louder. I feel I have mine right where I want it.

Only took about 20mins.... after a week of deciding if I should do it or not. I learned I wasted a week. If your thinking about doing this mod for a deeper and a little louder sound, just do it! I am so happy with the results. Not only is the sound deep and full, it feels stronger though out the entire range. I did 7 holes 7/16" in each pipe. I only did the outer plate, I may go deeper with 2 or 3 holes. But the bike is running so strong with no pops or backfires (I put 200 parkway and piney miles on her today) that I'm thinking it can't get any better. Did anyone else with a 07 C go with the 7 holes then add a couple deep ones? What was the result? I'll post a picture in my gallery.... can't figure out how to attach a pic to the post

Awesome. Thank for the pic, that confirms what I was thinking. If you don't go deep, is the sound still pretty good, or do you recommend going deep?

I'm contemplating trying maybe 4 holes in each exhaust, maybe 7/16 to start. Then add as needed. I don't want to go too loud at first (its almost nice being able to talk to my wife now and then while riding) but want to hear the roar a bit more. I noticed already that the much quieter exhaust on the VTX makes it easier to be missed on the road by cagers. The old bike was so loud, they could hear me a mile away.

You'll be glad ya did. I just went right to the 7 holes based on other posters and cause I did it around midnight and didn't want to start her up to test after every hole. Try the 4 then just add to that if needed. With the 7 holes I can hear the bike at highway speed and so can the cagers, yet still start her up at night with out ticking anyone off. And as far as going deep, still thinking about it but the thing that has me is the bike is just running to strong......... but then again maybe she'll get even stronger by going deep...ummmmmm:hmm2:

what size bit do i use for the deep mod. I already did the 7, half inch holes and it sound good. Just wondering what length and diameter I use to go through the second plate.

I used the same 1/2" Bit and only drilled 1 hole (the bottom hole) thru the 2nd plate of both pipes.

I'll be using the same size that I used for the 1st plate (7/16) I bought a 12" long bit. When I stuck a rod through the 1st set of holes it seems that most hit the 2nd plate about 8 or 9 inches in. Let us know how it sounds and how she's running.

Thanks for the reply. I drilled one 3/8s inch hole through the second plate on both pipes, and it sounds great. Now when I ride with my dad who has a HD 100th anniversary road glide with reinhardt true duals with open baffels I can actually hear my bike which is nice. He also commented on how well it sounds. I highly recomend this mod to anyone who is thinking about doing it. thanks
Zach

Now that's funny I don't care who you are. But I have a story about my Clayton mod, First I was only able to find 1/4" for the pilot hole and 1/2" for the final. Reading now for the last several months since I was a member of this site about this mod. nothing new as I drilled out my pipes on my Suzuki 750 in 1978, but my Honda VTX is much cooler bike. Well after reading this string today and the weather is great and I felt like it was something I had to do and I didn't want to do this twice. Being a somewhat of a mechanic, I did my homework got my tools (19.2 volt Craftman Drill, drill bits and blue painters tape. I went big, 7 pilots with 2 deep, followed by the 1/2" on the top pipe no problem, them 2 holes on the bottom started the third just as it broke through the bit broke as well, jumped into my jeep and off to the my local Lowes and purchased another. Taking care completed the remaining outer holes with the 1/2" then started the inner deep holesthe first inner hole and just about through the second bit broke. Total time drilling 35 minutes. Attempting to remove the broken bits 1 hour and they are still lodged in the outer baffle area. Started it up to see if there were any rattles, all I heard was a sweet beautiful deep roar. I going to grab the wife and go for a cruise. Thanks for all the pictures and post that got me to this point. I know I wll need to get the broken bits out but I will work this later unless it posses a safty issue.
