I like the looks of the stock VTX 1300 Retro exhaust pipes and was wondering if I could just remove some of the baffles to get a "fatter" sound or do I need to just replace the pipes ?

I did it when I first got my bike so I could hear the engine at higher speeds. It did an ok job of improving the sound. Here is a link with detailed instructions on how to do it.

The Riley mod is a great mod for increased sound without spending extra cash.

I know someone who did it and it sounded like a high powered vacuum cleaner. I don't recommend it. To each his own.

Or the Clayton Mod. I did it and think it sounds pretty good, especially when I get up on the throttle. Drill [7] 1/2" holes around each tailpipe...done. Be sure you tape off the end of the chrome tips.

After doing the holes in the back plate, I got a 1/2" peice of rebar from Lowes and sharpened a point on it. I then used a 5lb hammer to punch holes up through the baffles on five of those holes. Sounded very good. I still went to HK 2.5 classics though. But for the year it took me to save up for them, it workd great for me.

Has anyone tried taking out or blocking off the connecting pipe that links the two mufflers together on a stock exaust?

does the "riley mod" mess up your fuel mapping and whatnot or perhaps screw up the timing because a change in backpressure or something?

You want the cross over pipe on there. That's where the power comes from. I wish my aftermarket exhaust had one on it. I may upgrade my pipes soon.
