My trip odometer "A & B" resets sometimes when starting. This started with the bike not wanting to crank. At first thought it was the battery, but it was ok, then I just replaced the starter switch assembly tonight, but it still resets and the electric motor doesn't crank as fast as I think it should. Could this be the brushes in the electric motor that is shorting out ?

check the connections all the way from the battery to the starter itself I had a 750 that the connection at the starter would vibrate loose and when you hit the starter button it would arc and cause a short power loss.

I agree with the loss of power that is causing the problem.

Check your grounds. You don't mention what year bike you have but, the 02-03 had a ground issue. Not sure if they fixed it after that. They may look fine but, unbolt it from the frame and you will probably find corrosion on the connection and the paint not scraped off around the bolt. Clean them off real good and put some di-electric grease on once you crank the bolt(s) back down. The main one is under the seat but, there are grounds at the coils under the tank and elsewhere. The shop manual shows them all or you can go to Bareass's site for a detailed discription of the ground fix.

To start with, have you done "The Ground Fix"? This will correct most "loss of power" problems, and is something EVERY VTX needs. In So. Florida it should be done the first day you bring your VTX home. If you ride every day, rain or shine, like I do, you will do it every year or so.
I never wondered before, but my odometer does not reset on a loss of power, as when I remove the battery. I would suspect voltage spikes from ground trouble.
Follow the link below. Print a copy. Do the "Fix". Enjoy your ride.

Let me know if this cures the problem.

thanks for the help! I had couple things going on at the same time, the switch had to be replaced and the battery was starting go. The dealer also cleaned the grounds on the bike. So far today, its running fine. Going to add a relay to the Honda fog lights to take some of the pressure off the switch. This is the first switch that my dealer had to replace.

If you're running fog lights, you definitely need the relay. Your new swith will not last long with out one.

Had the same issue. Checked everything.Had already done the ground fix.
Turned out it was a defective reset switch.
Had it replaced under waranty and problem went away.

kevtx, On the 1300 side one of the guys (Jayfore) found a blown Odometer fuse causing his problems. It was a 5amp fuse and was marked as the Odometer fuse. Just for giggles check this fuse out, it won't take any time and could end up being the problem?
Good Luck, from your little brothers on the 1300 side.
