I am picking up a new VTX 1300C this weekend and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an exhaust/jetting to let it breatha bit more and give it a deeper "throatier" sound? Any suggestions would be appriciated. I will be commuting on the bike 120-140 miles round trip per day if it helps.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Scubamike, I also am looking for suggestions on exhaust for a 1300C and found that there is so much out there its hard to decide. I would like to go with slip-ons for 2 reasons cheaper and no re-jet plus you get a good sound. Im leaning toward the Hard krome 2.5" drag slip-ons but would like to hear from others that have them or any other suggestions. Maybe we will get some feedback, I got tons on saddlebags my last post.

The cheapest way is to modify your current exhaust is the clayton mod. May need to rejet when you do this. I have the hk 2.5's (not slip-ons) no need to rejet unless you change the airbox.

I picked up a set of the Vance and Hines Big Shots and they sounds GREAT!!! Had it rejetted and slipped a K@N Filter in the airbox. The pipes are loud but to me not annoying.

I have a set of bubs jug hugers and they sound awsome. Also removed the paira valve and rejeted the bike with a stage 1 dynajet kit.

I'm running Vance & Hines on my 1800. It's the third set I've bought over the years. I wouldn't run anything else. They're loud but not obnoxious and never had a set blue on me yet.

Hey Scuba and Gert, I have the Hardkrome drag slip on, on my bike very easy to install and I have the "throaty" sound that most of us are looking for and you dont have to rejet....I have many people ask "what kinda pipes are they, they sound GREAT"!
Hope this helps

Very happy with Vance and Hines Big Shot pipes. I had the re jet done and the sound is great. I also picked up horse power and the gas mileage has improved. I have an X cut air box cover, that allows more air flow. That alone improved the sound, even before I had the pipes installed.

[I][FONT=Comic Sans MS]Mine has the HK 2.5" American Classics, and the Kury High Five. Been rejetted, also. I would say that it sounds real nice.

I have the Vance & Hines Big Shots they are sweet. The bike sounds awesome and looks really clean with the new pipes. I also added a new air cleaner from Thunder manufacturing and rejetted the bike. I had the local Honda dealer do all the work so warranty still covers everything.

I just got my C, and am trying to decide what kind of pipes to put on it. I have almost decided on Hardkrome 2.75 Straightshots, but am hoping to hear from people like yourself, and what really sounds good.

Most replies say the sound is great and some have re-jetted and changed the airbox. Can anyone describe or quantify the performance changes? I agree the factory pipe sound is somewhat tame (but not bad). I'd only make the exhaust and other changes to get better performance, either power and/or MPG. What do y'all think? :hmm2:

What is the average price the dealer is charging to install a jet kit for the 1300? Labor and parts?

I'm a cheapskate, so I tried the drilling mod to my stock pipes and love it.
I drilled 7 holes in each pipe's rear baffle, all 1/2" holes in case I drilled too much and needed to insert a 1/2-in bolt to undo it, but didn't have to.
(this is not my idea, I read it in tips)

The sound is much deeper....brings out the loping rumble from that single crank pin. It's also louder but far from obnoxious. Rumble turns to a low roar when I throttle harder. I got to keep the better quality stock pipes without spending more than a few bucks for the drill bit. No re-jetting needed.

If anyone had the guts to drill THROUGH the rear baffle into the next baffle I would like to know the results. I've been temped to do it (using a 12" bit), but can't undo whatever happens. I know it would be louder, but might start sounding too poppy. I wouldn't want to do this unless I know someone else has had good results, or if I plan to replace the pipes anyway.

I just purchased a set of cobra slash cuts,a cobra stage one kit,and a k & n filter. I followed the directions on the stage one kit, which said to set the fuel mixture screw at 2 1/2 turns but it didn't run well. So I took it out to 3 turns and it's like a whole new bike. 100mph in 3rd gear,AWESOME power...The slash cuts are great, they are fairly quiet when cruising but when you get on it they bark like a ferocious dog.

Check out vtxexhaust.com

They modifiy your already cool looking pipes and from what I hear they are the best sounding of all the pipes. And less $$ than others. I am going to have it done this winter.

Does anyone know what the exhaust head bolt torque specification is?

I don't have a service manual, but if someone here does and could look it up, I would sure appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

As far as drilling the pipes, you'll get bored relatively quick. I started with the Clayton mod and then went to drilling a 1" hole under the existind pipe. Sounded good but I had to mess with it again :spank: and punched out the first plate in the pipe itself. Sounded much better but it has a nasty gurggling sond on decel :icon_redf . Now I'm waiting on my poor man's fix - J.C. Whitney 16" slip-ons. From what I have heard from others, they have a great sound for the bucks :hmm2: . $80.00 for the pair w/shipping. There is a need to do a little fabrication for the top mounting bracket due to the fact that the top muffler sticks out so much farther than the lower.

I just entered into this forum today so you will have to excuse my very late offering on this. I purchased some slip-on mufflers for my VTX 1300C. Sounds great, easy to install, and were only $189 US. Got them from ********* on the web. Good outfit for VTX parts, and there wasn't anything even remotely close to that price up here in the Great Whire North!

Memphis Fats, or anyone else with experience drilling out the rear baffles. Would you mind sharing more detailed instructions on how to do this as well as long term results from this mod. And is this the "Clayton Mod" that I am reading about?
I am only moderately mechanically inclined and any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Mark,
I drilled my stock pipes, ala the Clayton Root mod. It's real easy. The only thing I had to buy was a 1/8" x 6" pilot bit. $2.69. I already had a 15/32" bit.
The 15/32" hole is so you can tap it out with a 1/2" tap and put 1/2" bolts in if you want to plug it back up.
I like the mod. The only thing I experience is a few decel backfires when it's cold out - not very often, so it doesn't bother me.
The bike sounds better and I get alot of "Those aren't stock pipes, are they? What did you do?"
I like the looks of the stock pipes and the sound after the mod.
$2.69 and 10 minutes drilling was the cheapest mod I've done.
Due to letting a little more air out, I changed to a K&N filter, to let a little more air in. Seems to work just fine and no re-jetting is necessary.

Running HK Big 3s on the Green Ghost. Rejeting the carb is really simple. Im also running a Hypercharger with the Stinger Trap Door. This thing really loves the air. 195 main, Go with a 65 low instead of the stock 55. With 8 thousand neddle shim. Turn Idel out 2.5 from bottom. This has my 1300 on fire from Idel to REV limit.

My personal opinion when you select pipes is a few criteria, if you are concerned about performance ensure they have a crossover. If you are concerned about sound then select a pipe with removable baffles there are so many aftermarket baffles around that you can make a set of pipes sound almost anyway you want. I get so tired of hearing that this is the best sounding pipe or that is... Well maybe stock they are but most time your not limited to stock. The final and I beleive most important thing is make sure you like the look of the pipes. If you are going with a certain theme make sure it goes with it. In the end it becomes personal preference there are alot of great aftermarket pipe just make sure when spending your hard earned money you are getting what suits you.. :icon_poke

Hey,
I prefer to be called frugal lol.
I had drilled holes in a 400cc Honda SS a good many years ago and just loved the change in sound. I was going to do it to a 550 kawi ltd, but I think I decided not too.
I been thinking about doing it to my VTX but had fears of screwing something up. Some where along the lines of back pressure and maybe premature rusting. I remember how much better the 400 ss sounded after I did the drill out. I used 1/4" holes spaced about 1/2" apart in a circular pattern about a 1/2" away from the existing exhaust hole. I think it added up to eight holes.
Memphis (or anyone), has there been any negative results from drilling the holes as of yet????

I can't help but wonder if the tinny sounds are due to the size of the holes, placement or cuz not enough was removed. What say you?

Memphis Fats,
Does yours sound "tinny"?
Mine doesn't. It sounds GRRrrRRrrRRrrEAT!!
It's been about 15,000 miles and I don't see any rust on the drilled holes. I guess the bike doesn't stay parked long enough to get any condensation up there. LOL

Hi,

I have V&H big shot staggered on my Vtx1300c and I even ad the quiet baffles...I love the sound but I keep getting stopped by the cops. 150$ each times...I love the look of the pipes and the extra hp, so I can never put back the stock ones, but I need them to be more quiet...is there any ways? I ride in Montreal and cops on motorcycle are giving tickets like they were candies.

Thanks guys...

I have a 06 1300 VTX S and added Cobra slip on's. It's winter here but had to try one ride. Good thing it was about 40 F. that day. The first thing I noticed was a definite lag in power and the motor was running hot. It was like the mid range was dragging and it idled rough.
I installed a Cobra jet kit and it seem to fix the problems. I have yet to fine tune it because of this little snow and ice problem we have in Ohio this time of year. It idles much better...sounds great but no road test yet.
Every time I open the garage door snow flakes start falling.
If you change your pipes on the 1300 keep an eye on your motor temp. for the first ride.

I have sideburners on my 1300c and they are awesome. I started with the clayton mod and liked it for a while....well that was untill I rode with a group and heard everyones exhaust. There is a guy I rride with that got his pipe done at vtxexhaust. He likes them but I hate the sound. The sideburners have the best sound I have heard yet. I dont find they are all that loud. Maybe I am just deaf though.....LOL If price is an option do not go with the sideburners..they are pretty pricey. Also I did not have to rejet with these pipes. All that I did was adjust the a/f mixture with the screw. They also seem to have givin my bike more get up and go from a dead stop, and in 5th going past 60 is a breeze now and I can really feel the bike pulling now. Hope this info helps.
