You will be able to tell when you hit the rev limiter. LOL ! It the bike starts to break up ... SHIFT !

I'm confused. I didn't know the 1300s had a rev limiter.

I just go by the sound. Shift when it sounds right.

By sound and feel is the way i go,unless i'm speed shifting.

Great question regarding mph in each gear - rpms - shift points.
Those of us that previously drove inline 4-cylinders will certainly over rev a v-twin shifting my ear or sound.
Hope you get a sensible response.

If you have ridden or ride long enough you'll know.....The important thing is to not over rev the engine. Really no need to, it's a cruiser, but it is built for rapid accelleration!!!!

the rev limiter kicks in well befor any damage can happen.

best thing is just run her up till you hit it then you will know for sure.

putting around I shift a 15, 25, 35, 45, 55,

now getting on it 40, 65, 80, 100,
I can get 60, 83, 100........

I was used to the big in-line 4's (1100 and up) and relatively high rpm's. But even to my ear, I have never hit the rev limiter. She makes the most power around 3000-3500 rpm anyway. These are torque monsters at low rpm! You should have no problem.

Jim (jdr2dr):
What maximum rpm are you using for a redline with the Baron tac? Did it wire right up, or did you have to buy an extra "single-fire" adaptor? What model Baron tac did you go with??????

Don't just worry about reving too much, it is hard on an engine to run really low too. When it starts to pull, let it pull for a sec. then shift. You will hear when it is bogged down...stay out of there. You should be able to feel in your back side when it is pulling hard. Right in the middle of that is a good place to be. A good ref. point is to take the bike to 60 or 65 in 5th. Listen to the engine. It is build and geared to run there for hours. 75 in fourth would be a higher rev ref point. stay in that window and your breakin will go well.

Did it my self - bought it at CC.com -- Looks good I think - 3k is about 70, I usually run about 3.2 (75 to 80) between 3 t o 4k is the real high end torque range... I cruise in town (lower gears) about 2.5k to just under 3k -- getting it on I shift about 4K to 4.5k

+1 shifting to low of rpm range bogs the motor and puts a lot of load on the engine.

you'll get used to it i shifted my cb900 by looking at the tach so the X was a little funky at first. after a while you just know when

I think CharlieD has a good rule of thumb (putting around). But try not to get too hung-up on it; try to get the feel and sound of it.

Personally, I'm glad not to be thinking about looking at a tach. There are too many other things to be looking out for.

??? Charlie D, you got an extra gear in there that we don't have? :p

that there is the speed I do in each gear, there are roads here that you can't go any faster unless you like the cross country downhill ride for 500 yards or better

Ride it like you stole it. Change oil at 600 miles with valve adjustment.

When it starts bouncing off the rev limiter hit another gear. ( JK )

When it feels good shift it! Its to hard to jam gears and look at the speedo.

I have yet to "hit the chip"...This things got so much torque, that I'm doing illegal speeds without even trying....:harder:

I don't have a tach and never look at the speedo to shift up or down. The only time I look at the speedo is when I want to make sure I'm OK with the speed limit. You need to shift by feel and never dog it down. Chances are riders hurt their rides a lot more often by dogin them down than they do by to many RPM's.
