Put the windsheild on the bike for the first time.I went out for my first night ride had a really good time thought the windsheild would keep the bugs down
it worked really well.I was wondering where to set the windsheild height ?should I be looking over the windsheild or is this just a personal prefrence? The windsheild was set up by the previous owner he was a lot taller.
Thanks for any help or advice. Todd/newbie -'04 VTX 1300s

You should be looking over the windshield. I've heard the best windshield height is right below your eye level.

My windshield is a 15 inch Memphis Slim so I'm sitting quite a bit over it. It's a great height for me though since it keeps the wind off my chest and most of the bugs off of me. One thing I have learned is that what works for one person does not necessarily work for another. My H gets lots of buffeting when he rides my bike. (I think it's the helmet though) Good luck!

It’s really is a preference thing. Some like looking thru it and some like over. Experiment with it and decide for yourself. Personally I like looking over. I have a small sport type defector shield that replaced a Memphis Shades 19" and I love it. It keeps the wind off my chest and gives me plenty of air and I don't get any helmet buffeting.

It’s really is a preference thing. Some like looking thru it and some like over. .This is what the Memphis Shade site says about the windshield height.

"Most riders like to be able to see over their windshields. But in order to do this and still get ample protection, the windshield must reach up between the tip and the bridge of a riders nose. If it doesn't, a rider will experience mild to severe buffeting.

Many riders like looking through their windshields, but what they often fail to account for is rain. When it rains everyone has to look over the top of the windshield in order to see clearly. When choosing a windshield it's vital a rider chooses one that isn't so high that he or she can't comfortably extend themselves to see up over the top of the windshield."

Can't say it any better than that.. I got the 19 but should have gone for the 21... I'm 5'9' and it blocks most of the wind.. but I get a little helmet wobble from time to time.

Yep, that's about all that needs to be said. It's interesting but many of the stock shields that come on a Wing make the rider look thru them rather than over :hmm2: Maybe Wing riders stop when it rains :)

They call me Memphis Fats.
I'm not really fat (maybe a little). But I am short. I put a 21" ht. Memphis Fats (what else) on my bike and it's perfect. I can see the road over the top, unless I'm trying to see less than 20 feet ahead. The top edge clips me right on the bridge of my nose. I can easily look through the shield if I need to but prefer looking over it....kind of like wearing bi-focals.
I get minimal buffeting, and found much of it was coming from UNDER the shield. Added lowers and they reduced buffeting on my face even more, although I still get plenty of breezes.

Different bikes require different heights, depending on where they have to be mounted. A 17" or 19" on one bike could actually be taller than a 21" on another. Let your dealer help you by holding a shield up to your bike while you sit and visualize.

....and I don't work for Memphis Shades, although I know the folks there. They have some nice stuff....

added a Mfats 21" last week...then added the lowers today...still have a little more
buffeting than i was anticipating....but need to ride a few others to have a comparison...sounds like you do a lot of "tweak and ride" to get the flow you want...any suggestions on positioning the lowers to the upper shield???have a 3 inch gap at this point and time....and i also believe that i read somewhere by nchammer that the hondaline worked really well...and did not even need lowers

I ride with a 17" Mem. Fats, I look over the top and get only a little wind buffett around 45mph then at 55mph or better it's a smooth ride.

My lowers are mounted 4 or 5-inches below the shield, but mostly because of the Cobra light bar, which puts the turn signals in the way. I even had to slant my lowers back some to clear the bar & lights. That actually made it easier to use the highway pegs (lindby bar) because the lowered lowers block a lot of wind at my lower legs.
I think I could remount the lowers with the top mount over the lower triple tree, but haven't tried. I kind'a like the way they are.

I like to look over the top of the windshield.
