I just recently purchased a VTX 1300 Retro with 2900 miles. The dealer pulled the service record for me to determine the repair / maintenance history. No records were found. As a result, I am unable to determine if the 600 mile service had been performed. Maybe the previous owner completed the oil change himself / herself. If not, then how can I determine if the original oil is still in the engine? If so, what damage could it do? Also, the owner’s manual is missing. I contacted HELM, but they do not publish one for the ’05 Retro, only the ’05 C model. Where can I obtain one?
Thank you.

You checked in the sidecover for the book? As for the oil take a look at it and see if it's dirty or not, if nay question I would just change it.

Just because the dealer dsid not find service records won't meant it wasn't done, do you have more than one shop in towwn or near by, check them as well.
Also, since you can't go back in time and fix what might not have been done, best bet would be to change the oil and filter, check all the other fluids and if you are mechanically inclined check the valves yourself and adjust if needed.
Honda's can be tough and forgivig so if a service was missed it might be just fine. You will be able to tell a little by the look of the oil when you change it, pull the plugs, see if they are fouled or wet, if so clean them and perhpas have a mechanic check it for mix and tune the carb if needed.
If you bought the bike from a dealer, they should be able to get you a manual at no cost, it should go with out saying you need it, for basic reference and record keeping.
Good luck, chances are better than average your X is fine and will a great ride for you.
BTW, is your '05 Retro and "S" or an "R"?

Thank all of you for the responses. I'll just have it serviced, based on your recommendations. I checked both side covers, but did not find the manual, only the tool kit. It is the Retro "R" and was purchased from a Honda dealership (Southern Powersports of Chattanooga). It really is a very nice bike. Looks "brand new" and runs fine, but the oil looks dirty.
Thanks again.
