Hi Again,
I recently purchased a 2005 VTX 1300R with 2900 miles. It runs fine but whenever I stop and turn it off, I smell gasoline fumes, usually just below the fuel tank (on both sides). It is especially evident in the area near the air filter cover on the right hand side. I examined all the hoses entering and exiting the carburetor, but did not see any that were disconnected. This was a visual inspection with a flashlight, as I did not remove the tank itself. However, I removed the air filter cover and air filter. I did see a slight amount of moisture on the backplate (back of the air filter housing) upon removing the filter. Is this normal (the smell) or is this just my imagination. When I park my bike in my garage, the smell lasts for several hours.
As always, thank you.

I just got a '02 VTX 1800 and had a similar problem. Mine ended up being a slight split in the bottom section of the tank, underneath the tank. It was barely noticeable upon visual inspection but was leaking small amounts of fuel and causing a strong odor. I hope this is not the case with your bike but I thought I'd lend my experience.
