Unless you have done some serious internal modifications there is no purpose served. At the rev limiter you have gone way pass the torque curve and long past the time to up shift. Somewhere around 5000 rpms is the optimal shift point for maxixmum excelleration. Speedo 30 60 80 110. You have two 4" piston between your legs traveling at extreme velocities. Be careful.
This post probably does not belong in the classified section. You will get more responses if posted in the proper area.

You must really be reeming out your X! I've only hit my rev limiter once.

With a 4"+ stroke I wouldn't want to increase the RPMs much past 5000. Think "Piston Speed".
It shouldn't hurt a thing to run up to the rev limit. I do it on purpose a couple of times a week just to keep the plugs clean and a smile on my face.

The rev limiter is not adjustable, it's programed in the ECU box and set for 5700 rpm. The engine peak HP and torque hit at approx 5100 rpm so raising the limiter (if you could) would be of no gain what so ever. I installed a shift light on mine and set it for 5000 rpm, so accounting for my reaction time it will shift at max power. You can do all the power mods you want to the engine, but it's still going to limit at 5700.

If you don'y have a tach on board, the shift speeds that Wyandotte gave are right on the money.

Hi everyone, I'm from Montréal, Canada and find this forum very helpfull, so thanks to all of you. Went to a dealer to have a Custom World tach installed but below 2,000 rpm the reading was extremely unstabled. What type of tach would work on my bike, 2002 VTX 1800 "S" retro. Thanks.

I have a cobra but sometimes it simply stops working. I'm TOLD one ot the wires you find under the gas tank has a cheap connector and it's probably loose. I'm putting my VTX in the shop overnight for a oil change, lube and inspection sticker. While it's in i'll have them fix this loose wire. I bought my ride used with the tach already installed. Personally i wouldn't even bother adding one and i'm only getting it repaired because it's there. Most of my other bikes didn't have tachs so i guess i'm use to shifting by sound and feel. Old school!

Never had an issue with mine wrks grt. I wish Cobra would make a temp/oil pressure guage for the other side woul dlook great. Hey maybe a gas guage????????
