I bought a new 07 vtx1300r on saturday. I rode about 140 miles but after the ride I noticed strong gas fumes from the bike and on my jeans. I took it out Monday and Tuesday, I now have 400 miles on it, the fumes are diminished, but the engine has gas (or gas/oil) leaking on the outside front cylinder. Should I bring it back to the dealer immediately or wait for first tune and deal with it then?

Took delivery of my 06 1300c almost a month ago, never experienced what you're going through. I'd definitely get it back to the dealer ASAP, if nothing else to ensure that they can't claim it is somehow something you did.

Fuel on a hot engine is very dangerous. Ride it to the dealer and dont ride it till its fixed. Safety!!!! My 2.

I agree - take it to the dealer. As well, look behind the airbox, there is a fuel line that connects there. I'm also from Vermont. Ride safe

OK, I brought the bike back to the dealer, they fixed it right away, they said it was a loose (leaking) "overflow valve?". what ever, it's fixed, I drilled out the pipes today and I am over the 500 mile break in period now. This thing sounds, looks, rides, feels AWESOME! I love it! I only did 3/8" holes in the pipes. Sounds good enough, should I go 1 more step larger? Also, how important is the first 600 mile "service"?

600 mile service is important, but can be done by you.
all nuts bolts and fittings should be checked and tightened.
Oil and filter needs changed
valves should be readjusted not just listened to the way most dealers do.
brakes and clutch should be adjusted
all fluid levels should be checked and topped off is needed.
DON'T change the final drive oil it has a special moly in it to help seat gears and should not be changed till 24000 miles, if changed you can get gear whine if you don't put the special back in.

600 mile is very serious. If oil has not been changed already now is the time. Valves are checked and bike is checked for loose stuff and ajustments are made to brakes and clutch if needed. I would definately let them do tis service. That way they can never say you screwed it up and will not have possible warranty issues.(First service is probably one of the most important as far as warranty goes I would think)
