Has anyone ever cut a few inches off exhaust before? Am wondering if they have to be re-chromed?

I would think so. You will have that raw edge after cutting and that is all it will take, rust and crappy chrome on the end.

Bet your right, does make since. I just like to be different, wanting to change the looks of my exhaust. Was looking at taking off about 6" and adding different exhaust tips.

I take it you dont run baffles? Would a shorter exhaust mean less back preasure??

Took baffles out. Back pressure, I have no idea. Not looking at doing it anytime soon, just thinking about different kinds of mods.

You would be hard pressed to find someone to rechrome any used exhaust system, they do not want to contaminate the process with used pipes.
If you want to do some "mods" do some that makes sense, in my mind taking a saw to the pipes does not fall under that heading..............

If you can't get them rechromed, you can have them powder coated. I've seen them done in black or most places have a chrome color that while it doesn't look exactly like chrome, it is still pretty good. I plan on having my wheels done in the chrome this winter, to help with the cleaninf problems. Just trying to give you some options.

BTW...I do like your pipes as is. Your bike altogether looks good. So I figure whatever you plan on doing will come out good. Good luck.

I'm new to the forum, so I'd to say hi. I just got my 1800 c awek ago, but am already looking at changing some things. 1st is the exhaust pipe. I don't mind the sound but that huge chrome can has to go! I found a shorter version of the stock pipe from a company named roadhouse. It's supposed to give you a little more power, and a deeper/ throatier sound. Anyone hear anything good or bad about them?

Backpressure wouldn't change, but the pitch/tone probably would change....Think about a trombone...When the slide is extended, it drops the pitch of the note being played, and when the slide is brought in, the pitch of the note rises...Now a bike exhaust pipe length isn't even close to the length of a trombone, so the effect won't be that exaggerated, but it will change slightly...

cutting willl make a dif. in back pressure depending on how much u cut off. also be ready depending to play with your settings for the carb and a/f. i did this once before and got carried away, cut the rear pipe right before the bend ( looked like a straight dump pipe, and the front one just past the peg. now granted that was a bit of an extreme on the cutting but trying to dial it in was damn near impossible. it sounded funky at idle almost like u were underwater, but on w.o.t it was like a freakn nascar race untill u got off throttle and it sounded like a semi assualt rifle. i ended up getting rid of the bike and got my F but i would never do it again. i learned my lesson with the 500$ tickets. But if u do couldnt u simply get the cut ends sealed and then get endcaps to cover over ?

I am going to have this place do my 1800C pipe. I'm going to have it shortened by a foot. They claim they did all the testing to get the right amount of back pressure so, no computer or rejetting required. Has anyone had expirience with them ? http://www.vtxexhaust.com/about.php
