I installed a newly painted tank this morning being careful to check the vent hose, fuel line and the vacuum line.

Sure enough it ran for a few miles and stopped. The problem was with the venting. I took off the fuel cap and heard air rushing in. Of course it ran for a few more miles to get me home then died again.

With the old tank, I can blow air into the vent line and hear it entering the tank. The new tank will not let air into it from the vent line.

Can this be cleaned or opened in some way? I checked and made sure no paint was in the vent tube, a drill bit went in a good way, not as far as the old tank but about an inch, and felt like it was hitting metal. I turned the bit by hand and no paint came out.

What was done to the tank? Any welding or anything like that? It is best to always use your parts so you know what you have. Chances are the tank may have been damaged and needed to be sealed after repair. THis could plug the vent but there is really no way for paint to get up insdie a vent tube enough to block it off. I don't know what the vent looks like inside the tank. Is the tank new? If it was a new tank it could have a crimped vent tube or some type of blockage. You should contact the paint shop and get some questions answered and it is up to them to correct any poblems with the tank if the tank was supplied by them. Keep us updated with what you find.

Ebay tank, I didn't want to spend the money on a new one. The guys in the shop pulled a small dent and painted it.

I drained the tank and ran a small wire through the tube. Then put 120PSI into it. That did the trick. I could blow air through it with lung preassure after that.

I put the tank back on and ran for 12 miles with no problem. I think it is fixed.

BTW: do you have any suggestions for getting ALL the gas out of the tank? I drained the old tank, but still hear a little gas in it.
