Just bought a Zumo GPS device and need a little help with the power supply.

Mounting the brackets to the handlebars was pretty straight up. Very easy directions to follow with nice images(even a caveman could do it).

The power cable is where I am lost. Easy enough to plug one end into the unit itself but the hot/negative leads I need help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would think the negative could go to a good frame ground(bolt thru the frame). The hot wire would depend on if ya wanted it to work at any time or just when the key is on. Do you have a wiring diagram?Check rattlebars.com . If you know the power rating of the device you could wire the hot directly to the + side of the battery via an inline fuse.

Well...I don't know about the wiring issues or the cave-man dig but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last nite!

Sorry, couldn't resist that one. :stirpot:

I put a fuse box in.....Rivco fuse box....placed it on the glove box, left side of the bike just under the left side cover...very easy access.....ran the wires along the left side of the frame...youhave to take the seat and tank off to do this.....black wire is ground......put that to a frame bolt, red wire is live...removed the fuse holder and wired the red wire to the fuse box......I did have to put a noise supressor in because of the engine noise...it does help...put it in the red line

Simple...
1. Take the seat off.
2. Run two wires from the seat location under the tank and out by the bars.
(to do this take a long skinny rod, I used the end of a long bottle rocket which was good because it was flexible, attach one end of the wires to the stick via electrical tape.) Work this up under the tank and out.
3. Connect the ends by the bars to your device.
4. Attach a spade terminal to the gnd wire and attach to the battery
5. Attach a spade terminal to an in-line fuse holder or fuse block and then attach to Battery + or a Key ON line.
6. Attach the end of the remaining wire to other in of the fuse holder or fuse block.
7. Install appropriate size fuse
8. Wire tie/secure all
9. Re-install seat.

A gps draws almost nothing, so I would just tie into the headlight bucket. Use the running circuit for the + and the ground as well.
Running will be solid orange or solid blue with a single bullet connector, and the ground is solid green and has a double ended bullet connector. The GPS wires are so small, you can probably just unhook the bullet, shove the wire in the female, and plug it back together. Dont forget the inline fuse to protect the GPS. This will turn on and off with the bike. If you want it always on, you'll have to run a wire from the battery.

I wired mine into the headlight bucket as per Dillon--and I love it--works great. I am installing a fusblock soon, though, and intend on wiring it to the key at that point.

I took 12 gauge wire with a fuse link on the hot side of the cable. The other end is a power port for marine application. I ran the ground back to the battery. Will not :nope: depend on earth ground or frame. Too much chance for corrosion. Will have to take your volt meter and set it to continuity. You will have to check the tip of the lighter plug to what is center of the opposite end of the plug. That way you will know what is the hot lead and which is ground. I ran the wire up to the handle bars under the tank. Used nylon tie straps to secure the wire away from the motor and other hot, chafing items. I added wire loom to protect the wire too. I can take pictures of the whole thing to show you how my Garmin c340 is hooked up, if you like. E Mail me if you want it. Between wiring vans to make ambulances, Ham Radio exam (KD4MAN), BOCA codes learned in Firefighting and RVIA standards building my own 40' motorhome from a Greyhound type bus, I can screw things up with the best of them.

I wired mine into the headlight using the lightbar plug to pull power.

Here is a link to a picture of the power plug

A quick note to thank everyone for the advice. Most certaintly could not have done it with out you guys.

A brief description of how I actually did it.

Took seat off after making a trip to dealer to have seat bolts replaced. Apparently the manufacturer cross threaded the bolts in and they had to be cut out and replaced with some nice stainless steel ones.

Taped one end to a cloths hanger and carefully ran it under the tank and out.

Wrap the wire area over motor with some insulating wrap.

Tied directly into battery. I will never leave unit on bike unattended and it came with an inline fuse.

One trip to dealer
Two trips to parts store

6 hours later....took it for a test spin and works like a charm.

Thanks again,
