On Sunday, July 22nd, Stallings Police Sergeant Mike Kane was driving eastbound on Highway 74 and noticed a truck loaded with electronics and equipment going westbound on Highway 74. He thought it was odd to see at 4:00 am, and he turned around to take a better look. Upon finding its tag difficult to read, he pulled the truck over and began to question the occupants as to the contents of their vehicle. When Mike went back to his car to check the driver's licenses, the passenger exited the vehicle and ran toward Mike's car. Mike drew his weapon and ordered the suspect back to his car. He reluctantly complied, but when Mike approached the vehicle again, the suspect ran. As Mike was giving chase, the suspect suddenly stopped and punched Mike in the face as he was running toward him. Leaving him dazed, the suspect grabbed for Mike's gun but instead pulled out his asp baton and struck Mike at least twice in the head. Mike fell to the ground and was very disoriented. He heard the asp baton hit the ground, but he didn't realize what he had been hit with and thought that it was a gun that had misfired. He got up to give chase again, caught up to the suspect, and grabbed his shirt. As the suspect kept trying to get away, his shirt began to rip, and he started punching Mike repeatedly. Mike took out his pepper spray but his fingers were already numb and too uncoordinated from the repeated blows he had taken to the head. With the lack of coordination of his fine motor skills, he felt it was safer to leave his gun in his holster. Mike was so disoriented at that point that he said he saw three images of the suspect and "just tried to tackle the one in the middle". He was exhausted from the struggle and was just going to pin him down until help could arrive, but the suspect began pulling at his gun. Mike knew that his life and the lives of the responding officers could be in danger, and so he continued to fight him until he was finally able to get him handcuffed. It was later discovered that the contents of the truck had been stolen from two churches and the passenger was on federal probation. This charge would make him a habitual felon, and so he had been determined to do anything to keep from going to jail: he even later told a deputy that he wished had broken Mike's neck. The entire community is a safer place because this man has been taken off the streets.
