The Plan:

Lodging: We will stay in Maggie Valley NC for 2 or 3 nights, we are planning on staying at the Smokty Falls Lodge for all nights, Betty Boop is currently checking rates, if they fill there are more places to stay near by so please get signed up soon!!

Best advice ever. I did this with my wife. Slow, slow, slow, saftey course, sat in the middle of a parking lot while she made circles around me, helped her set up excercises similar to the MSF courses, slow rides on back roads, faster, longer rides on back roads all with me following her around to make sure she didn't get in trouble. I was so proud the day I came home and both her and the bike were gone for a ride solo.

Not a problem. :) My plan is to attend every bike rally within riding distance at least once. I've got the following on my list for this year: Black Bike Week, DELMARVA, Octoberfest (Myrtle Beach) or Biketoberfest (Daytona), Honda Homecoming, Honda Hoot, Little Sturgis and the Wing Ding. This gives me a 'road trip' each month from May through October.

This route is around 1033 miles from and back to Charlotte NC. I have tried to keep the drive time for each day to around 8 hours. If this sound reasonable to everyone I will check on hotels next.

Hmmmm....if we make that long a trip...we, Billy and I, will have to take Monday off too...no way to make it from Roanoke to Boone....from Boone to Home (another 6 hours)...in one day :)....do you think we'll make 266 miles on the parkway in 8 hours...??

then sunday...ride parkway some more and everyone head their different directions home ??

The trip up would be alot of interstate, but once is WV even I-77 is a senic route....lol. From the the rest is non interstate and ALOT of Parkway. I was surprised at how long it takes to get from point A to B on Saturday without leaving Virginia.

If this is too long of a route let's look at how to shorten it. :)

well basically my route is just a shortened version of Ray's route. It just cuts out the WV portion and goes straight to Front Royal to Skyline Drive. Interstate is the quickest way to get to where we want to ride. I'll look at some other routes and post one later.

Don't get me wrong...I'd love to be able to ride every minute of the route planned...I am just four hours further away going and coming.....and honestly...I don't think we'd make 266 miles on the parkway in 8 hours with stopping for gas...eating...looking...heck, we had a hard time riding the dragon and getting to little switzerland in a day...lol...and it was no where near as far...:);)...I am sure between all of us we'll work something out ;)

Just another idea. We could always hit the Dragon area again. There's lots of twisties around there that we didn't even ride. I really want to ride the Cherohala Skyway at some point. We could stay at the two wheel inn both nights and just ride around there.

I am up for anywhere....Billy had actually suggested something along the same lines...the Tenn boarder is right there and lots of awesome rides there too. He's got one of those maps with the rides marked out on them that you get at the dragon, can't remember the name of it. I really doesn't matter to me but i know some wanted to try out a different area...its just that first route was kinda long for us way way down south peeps....but what ever is decided on we'll make it work, even if it means leaving the group early :)

Hey guys..I've got us the four rooms for two wheel inn....but no luck with the microtel....I DON'T THINK ANY OF US THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND...There are no rooms at the microtel...do we wanna consider changing the date to the week before or look for another place to stay since we have 12 definates for this ride. Chime in guys and let me know something :)

How many of the definate Yes"s..plan to stay overnight and how many are just joining in for a day ride...that will help us determine when and where to stay..thanks guys :)

CRAP, didn't even think about it being Memorial Day weekend, that explains why I couldn't find any in WV either then. I work every other weekend so the weekend before I cannot, it would require me to burn 36 hours vacation and we are going for almost 2 week to Mexico in April.

I'm open for any weekend I'm off, but I would guess if already things are being sold out we will have a HARD time finding rooms and should change the date. I'm off:

I just checked the Microtel in MV, and rates are around $70-80 per night.
Applecover Inn is $45 to $90 per night.

We always stay at the Applecover Inn when we go...Its a family owned motel...very clean but the rooms are kinda small, which does not matter to us, we only sleep there..lol...the peeps that own it are awesome !! Big fire pit to socialize at in the evenings and lots of good places to eat !...I'll call Derrick (applecover) and see how many rooms he has open.

It covers some of the BRP, hwy 28, the dragon, cherohala skyway, & wayah rd. Stop in Franklin for dinner at Tallent's Steak Barn(they've got awesome food). Then around an hour ride back to Maggie Valley.

Ray I agree, looks like a nice ride, cept it will be a little long. One trip Billy and I took, we left Maggie valley around 9:30 10:00, went to the store at the bottom of the Dragon, didn't even ride it, took a left at the store, headed straight to the Cherahaulla skyway, rode it...ends up in Telico Plains Tenn...stopped for a cold drink..and headed back towards Maggie Valley on 441 thru the Great smokey mountain national park into Cherokee..then the parkway from Cherokee to Maggie Valley...and THAT WAS A FULL DAY... We got back right at dark...then went to Smokey Bones (BBQ ..awesome) for dinner...its in Waynesville about 15 minutes from the motel and town roads ....If we add the Dragon too that ride , we'll have to leave lots earlier..or be riding those Mountain roads at night...which, I don't really care to do :)..we are gonna bring our Madd..Backroads map..nc,ga n tenn..map with us ...It has tons and tons of rides too...

Well...sorta..lol...I did finally get an automated response from my email, saying he would contact me soon...lol..:)

I have emailed the Smokey Falls Lodge too..they emailed me back and said they could accomodate our group (needing 10 rooms as of today) prices range from 79 - 149. I have to call and get the details on prices and which rooms are what. I am assuming everyone wants a normal room,...no hot tub in room or anything special right..(cept no smokin for you :) ) If so hopefully they have 10 of the rooms at 79.00...lol...I'll post back after I talk with them...very nice place !! They even have a special covered bike parking area :)...a little fancier than the applecover..lol...but if Derrick doesn't call me back soon, maybe we should go for this one if the price's can stay around 79 a night..let me know what you guys think. I am gonna call in a few to check on prices :)

OK fellas...since Derrick at Applecover has not called me back yet, I spoke with the peeps at Smokey Falls Lodge...they do have 10 rooms @ 79.00 a nite...she has blocked them off for me ...you'll need to call and give her my name...Caroline Long...and she'll change your room to your name, she will need your credit card number to hold the room, but it won't be charged now. They have a 48 hour cancellation policy....:)hopefully, we wont need that :). All of these have atleast a queen size bed...regular room. So if you want to upgrade (pay more) your room, just let her know when you call and if you do ask her to remove one of the 79.00 rooms..K...check out the web site in above post, you can see what kind of rooms they have if you wanna change from the 79.00 version..lol..:)

I'll send a pm to each person I KNOW IS GOING also...K :)

Since I posted that I've got my new riding gear and have been slowly teaching my busted hip that it's going to ride whether it wants to or not. It really only bothers me when I sit for long periods or am riding but It's not bad enough to stop me. I've been staying on the bike every nice day that I can but 600 miles is a good jog with it screaming at me. I've still got a few weeks ot work it out if the weather will just cooperate a little more.

heh heh heh... too true.

Seriously, he had me on some pretty heavy stuff early on. To the point that I was working hard at avoiding addiction. I kept asking for less lethal stuff and I guess he finally decided that if I was that worried about getting off of pills that he could help. Never really had an addiction worse than cigarettes but my old man was an alchoholic so I've always been paranoid about it.

I still got pain but it's more of a nagging, annoying, "damn I shouldn't move that way" pain. It's not a big deal until an hour or more of riding and it's not the rolling on the floor gagging and wishing you could walk (or hell even crawl) to the gun cabinet and get it unlocked kind of pain (which I've had and which is "bad"(tm))

End result is that I'm not sure that I can make the entire ride but I'm at least going to ride up for an afternoon and have a beer with folks just to be sociable. I figure that if I can make that kind of effort others can too. :D :D :D :D

We're not staying Sunday night so we'll probably head out late Sunday morning.

It doesn't get dark till after 8pm so, if we leave out around 8 or 9am, we'll be back with daylight to spare.

lol...if ya say so..:)...You know how billy and I ride, and we headed up to the dragon..cut back to the left at the store.....not taking the dragon..and straight to the skyway..all the way across to TN..and back to MV..just did make it in before dark..and I think we headed out about 9:00 am..and we didn't even stop to eat :) just for gas and a soda.

Guess we'll just ride as long as we can and then head back ;)

Yes we are staying in Maggie Valley each night...staying at the Smokey falls lodge..link at the top of the page. I think there are 10 or 12 from here...a couple friends of mine and who ever else wants to join in :)..
go to the first page for a link to the lodge and you can see who alls going there also...just ignore the first couple posts about staying in other places..blablabla...we changed that to just staying in MV and riding from there each day :)

We are riding up :)...on FRIDAY...will be leaving Walterboro exit 53 (I-95) around 8:30 or 9:00 (since were gonna meet others in travlers rest,sc)...if ya wanna ride with us. We have friends who are trailering...not sure what time they are leaving :)

Hey...apparently they decided to GIVE AWAY the king/queen suite on the 24th of April...I am sorry...the only room left there is a huge one with three beds at 149 a night..I am sure you don't want that..soooo

I called a place or two and found a queen room for 79.00....1/4 of a mile down the road from us. I'll pm you with details so you can decide if you want it or look for yourself...I gave the guy your name if you call :)..pm'm you now

I enjoyed meeting you in GA..and just want you to have a chance to meet all the great peeps we ride with...:) I've met at least 75% of the guys and wives going...and call them all friends...and am looking forward to meeting the ones I have not yet met :) We'll have a great time.

It seems smokey falls has a couple pretty good gathering spots, so even if you end up having to sleep 1/4 mile down the road we can all still hang out together till bed time :)...

In fact the ride last september we stayed a mile or so down the road from the rest...but we hung out together till everyone was ready to turn in ;)....So don't skip the trip ...K..:)
