I posted this elsewhere but realized this is probably the best spot afterall.
I have a Cobra exhaust n just purchased a spike air intake for better performance ( hp ) and I really like the look. I took it somewhere to get installed as just really did not want to deal with jetting and adjusting the carb. Well..shop just called me and said they put stock airbox and filter back on as he could not get it tweaked to run as it should. He had 4 hours into it and I am sure he was just too busy to spend more time adjusting....testing and readjusting, etc..
Is there anyone running this sort of set up that can advise me the correct carb settings??
Try and determine which kit is in there. I believe in the Dyno-jet kit the needle has a different number of grooves at the blunt end. This will help identify which kit is in there. Perhaps CharlieD will read this and respond, or you could try a search.
I am getting ready to order the Factory Pro Jet Kit...as per others advice on here. Gonna order that and take to someone different and have them tweak it out after installing the spike air intake. Will try to find Charlie D's info that I hope will give me jet settings, etc .... Thanks for the input !
With my Cobra Speedsters and when I was fitted with a Hyper-Charger I was running 58 Pilot / 215 Main / Needle on 3rd slot from blunt end with A/F screw at 1 3/4 turns from lightly seated.
If the spike allows more air then the Hyper-Charger, then you might need a fatter main, perhaps 220.
Thank you blackdot...Charlie D answered me and had it at 220/58 and needle on 4th & A/F at 2 turns.....I am thinking the spike intake brings in more air....hope these specs get me where it needs to be......lol......I am so afraid my bike isnt gonna run right after it gets the work done and I know its not hard but I have never messed with carbs out of being afraid that I would not do it exactly like it should be done...trying to leave it up to someone that has done it many times, etc.......lord knows I absolutely hate taking anything to a Dealer
I wish I could blackdot...I would love to find someone close to me but have been unable to do so. I got info from Charlie D and ordering Jet Kit in next few minutes so I can start fresh with the Factory Pro Sage 3 Kit since I am unsure which jet kit is installed now.
220 main jet and 58 seem to be the magic number at this point so gonna go with that and see how it works out.
Thanks for all the input
If you're willing to try the work yourself, here's a primer to get you started.
1. read up on how to remove the fuel tank
2. once tank is out of the way remove the air cleaner
3. loosen the clamp that holds the carb in the intake runner, a short black rubber tube about 2" in diameter
4. loosen the drain screw at the bottom of the carb bowl and catch the small amount of fuel left in the bowl
5. tip the carb back and forth by holding the top and bottom while pull outward and the carb should slip out of the intake tube
6. now the carb can be tipped up enough to get at the bowl screws
6a. choose a good screw driver for these screws, as they can strip, they do not need to be super tight, but often are
That's enough for now, have a think and decide if you want to tackle the job. Loads of help here as always.
Thanks guys...nice video also...I am pretty mechanically inclined but think I will just take it and have it done....just want to drop it of before work and know that it gets done so I can pick up after work.....2 hours labor @ $65 per hour is probably worth the aggravation I will more than likely go thru....LOL
Stripped screw head....lost clip..spring, etc.....if it can happens it usually does with me
I just want to make sure I give him my preferred settings so ot gets done smoothly and without extra hours for tweaking.
With Cobra free flowing exhaust and spike air intake I plan on using 220 main jet..58 pilot needle..A/F @ 2 turns and hope that gets me where I need to be
Thanks Charlie D...I printed that out yesterday as my jet kit should be here today or tomorrow.
I purchased the spike air intake and of course it came with no instructions and one would think it should be a breeze to install but i have my doubts...lol....
So...is it not a good idea to install the proper jets and settings...then put tank back on for a ride or are you telling me to do 1 step at a time and test ride before next step ??
That way would seem quite redondit taking the tank off and on several times, etc ???
Well...I installed the air intake and rejetted this weekend. Took about 2 to 2.5 hours for everything. On 1st ride I was very impressed....more responsive....quicker and sounded great. All seemed ok and after only a few minutes tweaking the pilot screw I thought it turned out perfect.... BUT....I am about 95% there....I get a surge...hiccup..hesitation......not sure best way to describe it but at 60 to 65 at steady cruising is where it happens...and ONLY after bike gets warmed up for a while which is why I guess I never noticed it in the beginning. It pulls well and runs good when you thump the throttle but at steady cruising is where I need adjusting
Not sure if I should put clip on 3rd instead of 4th or????? Wandering if I need to adjust float also ???
Any thoughts ??
Just FYI.....right now I have 220 mainjet..58 pilot...clip on 4th groove and A/F at appox turns out
vtx1010, I have been noticing the same on my bike with exact same setup (but I am running 3rd needle clip with one shim). Hard to describe the sensation at 60-65 mph, it is like there is a slight delay between the throttle twist and response in motor output. May try to drop to the 215 main, but that is the only thing I can think of.
No I did not get the A/F screw.....didn't want to wait on it..lol......guess it would be a good idea to order that and get it put in. Carb had been jetted when new and had a new pilot screw in place which I "thought" I could get to pretty easy but ..NOT.....pain in the a.....
So..you have spike air intake..cobra exhaust and have the exact same settings?
How far out on A/F ?
Yeah I tried in vain to adjust A/F screw when I did the SCAR mod a couple of years ago. It was an enormous pain to adjust...Glen's is worth it! For my setup, I have cobra speedster swept pipes...I do not have an aftermarket intake, but I did decap my stock airbox (per bassdude) so it flows a lot more air hence my rejetting.
Yea....I need to do SCAR mod but was told NOT to do it while doing the intake and rejet.
I am sure this intake brings in more air than your Mod so hard to compare EXACTLY.....
think I will get the A/F screw as it surely would be a lot easier for future mods
If you are rejetting, and putting in Glen's AF screw in the future, you really don't need to do the SCAR mod (with exception of clipping plastic tit on needle retainer, which you should have already done anyway). Will be interesting to follow your progress, and I will share mine. Decapping the stock airbox certainly does not flow as freely as some of the aftermarket intakes, so I would expect we will have some slightly different results. Despite the sluggish throttle response we both are having, the overally performance increase is really worth the effort. My bike runs so much better now!
Not looking for crotch rocket...looking to make this bike run as well as possible. It sure runs better now...faster throttle response, etc......only issue I am having is after it gets warmed up...15 to 20 minutes of good riding....at steady cruising speeds it just has a little blip...hesitation..surge.....not real bad but noticeable...will have to tweak but not 100% sure which way to go....clip on needle....adjust A/F some more ????? etc ?????
