Insurance wants to total my VTX

I had someone make a left right in front of me 3 months ago. Broke 11 ribs and collar bone. I am slowly healing up. I had 4400 in damage to the bike. It was all bolt on and after market items. The insurance company is talking about totaling the bike with a value of the bike without the aftermarket items. Has anyone had experience with that? Maybe some options? I do have an attorney for my medical claim.

It is quite common for a standard insurance policy to NOT cover aftermarket add ons or custom paint. It is often necessary to buy a "accessory" policy to cover these items. This varies by insurance company so we can't really comment accurately unless we know who your insurer is.

If they're not going to cover the accessories, I'd strip off anythings that good and sell or keep for the next bike if that's in the cards. And glad you're still here to post about it.

I will say my buddy just totaled his and Progressive covered everything. I mean everything. He showed them the receipts and they cut him a check for upgraded paint, exhaust, powder coating, etc. He had a 2012 BMW K12 I think. My insurance does not cover upgrades, just the value of the bike.

Was the operator of the vehicle issued a citation by the police? Were you?

If yes to the former but not the latter, does the operator have insurance and what is the liability limit?

May we assume that your retained lawyer is being paid on contingency? If yes, then let them handle it for you by means of a letter to the insurance of the other vehicle.

Your helmet, clothing, anything damaged is eligible for reimbursment (as long as you were not cited)

I hope you heal and have no nagging injuries but your lawyer will advise you on all of that

Your right that the insurance probably will not cover accessories/alterations is not cover and neither will the other guys if he isn't well covered. But I am glad to hear your healing.
