Poor gas milage and black smoke

Bought a 2008 N last November and am only getting about 22mpg this year. Fuel light on at 90 miles. I am going to do the ground mod but am not sure if this is all I need. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Sounds way rich.
What type of air intake on it?
Does it have one of those plug in fuel box things? Can't remember what they called.

K&n air filter and if you mean a fuel control box yeas I just found it. The guy I bought it from said it didn't have one. I also did the ground mod but could only find one of the bad ground wires.

Start by disconnecting the fuel programmer and see what happens to how the bike runs and the fuel mileage.

You also probably need to clean your plugs. Running that rich they are likely black.

I pulled the plugs yesterday and yeah they were really coated. Work the next few days so won't be able to work on the bike. I will pull the fuel map out and see what it does. My you brakes are rubbing a bit but still look good I pulled them back a little and will see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help all.

Vinish meant to physically take the fuel controller OUT of the circuit, not just pulling the map. The stock computer will run it then.

Brakes should rub slightly by design. Not to the point where the wheel won't turn freely.
It is common for those fuel programmers to fail which is why they suggest removing it. You only need to worry about that sort of thing if you have extensively modified the air intake.

Maybe you can just disconnect the fuel controller power wire and it will stop working and the bike will revert to OEM control. No guarantee that this will happen but worth a try.
