    Oil change frequency.

    Hello all,

I bought my bike used and no user manual was included. I did find a pdf service manual which seems to indicate that I should change my oil and oil filter every 8000 miles. Have a 2003 VTX1300R.

First, am reading the manual correctly? Is it actually 8k miles?

Second, I'm a bit confused because I've read that motorcycles are harder on engine oil than cars and I don't know many cars that recommend going out to 8k before changing the oil (most I've seen have been about 5-7k recommended). Any comments on this?

    Thanks and safe riding...

Oil is the life blood of any combustion engine. I'm probably go a little overboard but every vehicle I own gets an oil change every 3 months or 2500 miles. Consequently I have very few mechanical issues. However, oil and filters aren't as cheap as they used to be!

Be sure to change the filter when you do the oil!! Also, check around there are alternatives to using Honda supplies. For example, the Purilator PL14610 is a better filter at half the price and is available at most part stores. Oil is cheaper to, but as there are so many different choices and views on that subject I'll let you search that out yourself! (I just use a full synthetic 10w40.)

If your bike is brand new (like mine) I would recommend Changing the oil and filter at 600mi, then again at 2000mi. with Dino Oil.
(Dinosaur Oil - REAL oil, not Synthetic)

From there on, I'm going full Synthetic, but to answer your question:

Dino Oil: 3,000mi, oil and filter.
Full Syn: filter at 3,000mi (let it sit over nite, you lose about 1/2 a quart changing the filter only.. top it back off) - filter and oil change at 6,000mi.

I ride about 1-2k a month, so time frames dont matter to me.

Thats just me, and like Lone Rider said, there are about as many opinions on this as... well, I'll let you finish the rest of that.

Here are some links to discussions on oil maintenance. They should answer your questions.

There are more, just used the search function at the top of the page. Usually go to "Advanced" and type your topic. You'll get numerous hits for the search.

    Is that kilometers or miles?

One needs to consider the wear and tear the clutch puts on the oil...something a car does not. I'm in the 3K for dino and 6-10K synthetic court.

when i came to the us, i was supprised, how small the service-intervalls for cars and bikes are!
in Germany, for instance, a volkswagen golf 1.6 ltr has an oil change interval from 24.000 km or every two years with normal oil, or 48000 km or every 2 years with special VW synthetic oil.

    compare that to our bikes:
    24k km = 15k miles - 48k km = 30k miles
in germany you can drive 130 km/h = 81 m/h on the normal highways - or no speed limit at all - that means, higher rpm's than our bike has
the car has 1.6 ltr engine - our bikes have 1.3 ltr (with a verry low rpm)
    our speed limit is max 55 / 65 miles = 88 km/h / 104 km/h
honda germany gives the service intervalls for the shadow and the x 1300 (no more available since 2006) with 12k km = 7.5 miles with normal oil!!! double with synthetic.
    (service interval x 1800 = 8k km)
k&n avertise their oilfilter with up to 80k km = 50k miles!

    i guess, i can't be that wrong

ps - i checked recently the oil - no loss, no gas smell, feels good, oil in there for 12k miles)

What's more important, Time or Mileage?
Change every 6 months even if it's no where near the
recommended mileage, or disregard the time and change at the magic mile mark?
Does the oil degrade appreciably over time?
