    Homemade saddlebags?

Has anyone made their own saddle bags? For some nice store bought ones you can spend about $500. I know that there are cheaper ones, but I was thinking about having some made for me. My Mom is quite skillful at sewing, willing, and has all the equipment necessary.

If anyone has any knowledge about this, perhaps has a pattern that would be great. Otherwise, some insight would be nice. A few questions that I have:

    - I was thinking about Easy brackets with the bags made of hard leather, maybe some hard plastic backing for rigidity. Anything sound wrong?

    - Would you make the bag hold shape, or somewhat like a purse where it expands and conforms to the shape of the objects are placed inside it? Would that look terrible? I hope this makes sense. Basically, have it always hold shape or no.

Any other suggestions would be great. This is my sole transportation, rain or shine in North Carolina. The only time I will not ride is ice. I have more time than money. I also think this would be a fun project to commence upon.

    Thanks for the help.

I don't know about how to do it homemade. But I did find a local guy that is a custom leather worker, and I am going to have him make me a set that resemble what you would expect on a horse with a couple of alterations of course. Guy charges $200 for custom, saddlebags......can't beat that price!

I would think you would want them to hold their shape, if not they will eventually get stretched out and be horrible looking...Just my opinion.

Flying Hawaiian was working on homemade bags awhile back. I don't know how it ever panned out for him tho. I gave him my old bags from my crash to disassemble for patterns. Maybe, if he made them, you could get a copy off of him.

You might try to model it after someone else's saddlebags in your area, or see if there if Tandy Leather has any patterns for sale online.

If you are going custom than make them the way you like. Take some cardboard and cut out templetes and put them on the bike and picture it in your head. Try different designs. Make them fit your needs and fit the bike. Have fun
