My new 40.00 bike!
Hey everybody, I've had my 1300R for a little over two years. It's been a blast! My only complaint has been lack of power and long warm up time. Well today I finally did something about it. After reading about richening the a/f mixture I figured what the hell, I'll give it a try. Installed Glen's permanent needle this afternoon, fairly easy install, initial setting 2 1/2 turns out. Was hoping for a little improvement in cold starting. After tuning all I can say is OMG! It's like a whole new bike! Warm up time is almost instantaneous, throttle response is extremely crisp, even the exhaust note from my Sideburners is better. The off idle torque seems tractor like, much easier to pull away from a standing start. It now pulls strong all the wayy through the rpm range. While riding, I have to keep checking which gear I'm in, it pulls like I'm in a lower gear... 5th feels like 4th. Why did I wait so long? Oh yeah, since it was me doing the install there was one hiccup. While fine tuning after first cranking the bike died, it would restart then go dead, nearly ran the battery down trying to get it running again, real hair pulling time, and I don't have any hair to spare. Well, make a long story short, I was nearly out of gas, swithched to reserve and it fired right up, duh! Sorry for the long post, just really stoked about this improvement!

Over this past winter and spring I did mine and I know how you feel. It is like riding a new bike. I just used the adjuster though, this winter I will replace with the permanate mount.

It does kind of just hang there. The only reason I got the tool instead of the permanent mount was I'm not crazy about someone being able to mess with it.

I was going to wait until next Spring to install the permanent screw, but I think I'll do it now. I've come to dread starting it this time of year as it is so sluggish and stalls when starting off when it's 65 or colder.

Hey Red, yeah, all I did was adjust the a/f mixture. I know it seems a lot for a little but honestly it did make the huge difference with my bike. It's truly amazing how well these bikes respond to this minor adjustment. It sort of reminds me of GM cars in the late '70s. I had a brand new Olds Cutlass that stumbled on acceleration and would barely run until it was fully warm. The fix was to drill out the primary jets in the carb., did this and the car improved 100%. All I can say is try it, you'll like it!

Just installed the permanent adjustment mechanism from Glen. Bike was cold and practically started right up. Was rather impressed after a couple minor adjustments of the A/F and the idle control. Throttle seemed to be noticeably more responsive. As Roomer mentioned, the exhaust even seems to sound better. I would estimate that it took me just over an hour.
Would have been quicker, but my boy's have been in my tools again and some are missing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ANYWAY... Very wet and rainy here today so I will wait until it's dry to go on a test drive. (I must not be a real biker...I don't do rain. ) ![]() Ray |

Hey, I want to get the permanent A/F adjustment mod, but I am kind of hesitant about how to install it...I could use some learned guidence from anyone out there...Also, would this help with my back firing during deceleration?...Please help...Thanks...

Have you done the PAIR valve removal? That would probably help you with the deceleration issues. The A/f tool comes with decent directions/instructions. It's quite simple. Hardest part is taking your tank and air box off. I would definitely agree with that! Well worth the money. ![]() |

...and once you're there, doing the pair valve mod is easy as well. Mort

+1 on the above.. Have done both the PAIR mod and the SCAR mod on mine... Changes everything... Quick starts, fast warm ups, better throttle response and so on... Just got the perm A/F tool from Glen... Just adding crap to my already burdgening list of adds ons.. heheheheheh... I love it..... you will too.. do the Pair and the SCAR and add the A/F tool.. no matter which one the perm or the adjuster.. either will help you dial in the perfect mix without having to drop the tank and carb cover every single time you want to adjust.... Think it runs good now? Wait until you have these done... then you'll understand just how much is waiting to be unlocked on these bikes....

You will not be sacrificing MPG by tuning up your bikes engine. Making it a little more rich will not affect your mileage enough to be of concern.. IMO others feel free to chime on if I am wrong. I haven't noticed any big drop.. And whatever I am losing (if I am at all) it is well worth it to have my X scream and run hard

![]() I did the Perm A/F Screw, SCAR, PAIR, and Doug's Intake.. Just simply amazing the difference. Absolutely incredible.. I was grinning for a day after doing it and feeling that throttle response.... like going from 1300 to a 1400 or 1500.. Crisp, responsive.. You will not regret the.. Air Intake ($100), Scar ($0), PAIR ($20), Glenn's Perm A/F ($40).. $160 for a completely different throttle response and quite a bit of power is extremely cheap. -Gonz Last edited by Gonzo1970; 01-31-2010 at 02:22 PM. |
