I was told by my dealer that they wouldnt pass a set of modded stock pipes.
He siad because they are modified from the stock configuration they are no good.
After market will pass here if they are not modified from the way they are sold.
    Whatta pain in the a$$

    IM with ya Bass...
I would love to go back to Ohio.
I miss the midwest...winters and all.
Virginia would be ok if it wasnt for the laws here.

I was by your old stomping grounds today...Had to go to the company HQ in Columbus today...Then got my speakers from Pastor Dave on the way back...I also remembered those little A-frame chalets in Lakeview...Found a website for them when I got home and shot 'em an e-mail for pricing and stuff...Maybe get one of those for our trip/honeymoon this summer...

See if your brother has any idea if/where he'll be playing on Friday night, July 24th...We're leaving here on Thursday morning, and staying thru Saturday morning..Gotta get back and rest up for work on Monday, 'ya know??

I'm going to have disagree with the dealer on that. Federal code 205.162-2c says:
"Any act included in the list prepared pursuant to paragraph (a)
of this section is presumed to constitute tampering; however, in any
case in which a presumed act of tampering has been committed and it can
be shown that such act resulted in no increase in the noise level of the
vehicle or that the vehicle still meets the noise emission standard of
Sec. 205.152, the act will not constitute tampering."

And 205.173.2 which deals with the warnings the manufacturer is required
to include with the bike says in part:

"Federal law prohibits any modification to this exhaust system which
causes the motorcycle to exceed the Federal noise standard..."

So among all the trash (at least the way I read it) the exhaust is fine even if modded as long as it still meets the noise requirements. Of course we all know why we mod our exhaust. On the up side, go to the link for the federal code in my original post and search page 143 to look at the testing procedure that has to be followed. I don't see how it can be enforced on something like the Clayton Mod. The more radical mods would be a different story.

But it's still a pain and it still looks like to me bikes are being singled out when there are cars and trucks that are just as loud. And there will still be dealers or other shops where you take your bike to be inspected that will be misinformed or are just being a pain.

Yep, they are illegal if modified. Mine are debaffled but I built a set of baffles that I can put in in under 5 minutes that make it almost as quiet as stock. Unless someone knew what they were looking at mine would pass for stock. I made the baffles before I went to Myrtle Beach last Fall so that I could slip into town quietly and find out if they were enforcing their new ordinances. I keep them in my saddle bags just in case I ever ride where they are needed.

MtnCruiser- Would you share with the rest of us how you made the baffles. I assume that when you cut out the baffles with the whole saw you modified it so it could be put back in. Would you care to share how you did it and provide pics of the finished product. Thats sneaky- I like it!!!

Okay, just because I feel it needs being said....

I can understand why they are doing this, SOME (MANY?) bikers did create this problem with pipes that are too dang loud. I have a bike and I hate the roaring pipes going down my street as much as I hate the bumping bass thump-thumping. Yes, I am too dang old (45), but that's the reality of it.

I'll stick with my nice and quiet stock pipes.

Well...to each his own, but I love my Bubs...
And I have seen people in cages with the window up check the mirror when I come up beside them so I do think louder is better.
But yea,,,,Ive heard some that sound like straight pipes and thats TOO loud.
