Hi guys, i am new here and have just purchased a 2006 1800N VTX and i am in love. I Have read the posts on drilling the pipes and this afternoon decided was a project for me. all went as planned, i drilled 3 holes in the top and bottom pipes and when i started the bike, was please until i gave it a little throttle. there is a whistle or chirp on the bottom pipe. they are stock and never drilled. I drilled through the initial outer casing and the inner baffle on the top and bottom pipes at 6 oclock and at 8 and 4 just throygh the initial casing and it seems the bottom pipe is the one making the noise (whistle/Chirp). any thoughts on how to correct? i love the forum and hope one day i can contribute. :hmm2:

First of all welcome to the Cafe... Now my question... did you drill through the billet end caps? Or did you take them off and drill through the baffles below them? I'm not saying either way is right or wrong, I'm just wondering which way you went with that... I have stock pipes that I removed, but I always wondered if this "clayton mod" could be done on N pipes...

Welcome to the cafe. I used a 16" bit on mine. I didnt have to tape up much and went in deep to the pipes. I also drilled 5 holes in mine I dont have the same issue. Mine sound pretty darn good. The wife was following me in her convertible, Had the radio on and she said it was loud enough to cause her to turn up her radio. This is good because on the bike. It dont seem that loud. It does rumble good too. :choppersm

Thanks for the wark welcome and fast replies guys!

Spoiler, this is just my first post so I cant send pics yet but this is exactly what I did. There are 3 screws that hold the pipe cap on and I removed them and and took off the caps. I drilled 3 small holes in the ends and at the 6 oclock position I used a 15/32 8" long, minus what was in the drill, and hit a second baffle (i am guessing) and went through this as well and did this for the top and bottom pipes. I plugged the hole on the bottom and the whistle stopped. I am guessing I did not go far enough as Jim posted that he used a 16" bit.
I will wait for replies before I drill further as I dont want it to be too loud (I know some folks think thats not possible) and wake the neighbors in the mornings. thanks for the assistance.

I should have added, I am happy witht he new found rumble of the pipes not counting the whistle and it whistles (maybe more of a chirp) with or without the caps installed.

I cant wait to post pics of her. This is like bringing home the new baby! 25.5" high and 734lbs
