i don't know why some people tell how many miles they can go from fill up until the low fuel warning light comes on. we don't know how many gallons were consumed. i've calculated 23 MPG using 87 octane, travelling 300 miles in stop and go traffic. three times each i bought 4.1 gallons and then i bought 1 gallon. i rode 23 miles and the low fuel light came on. so 300/ 13.3 gallons = 22.5. comments?

California gas is crap compared to what they sell in most states

gas mialage can only be calculated over long periods say 20 tanks then do the math which you did.

Driving habits and different gases will give you all kinds of reading. I never check or care when the light comes on I fill her or she won't run forever.

I am very confused about your millage. I have the N model and it has the same size tank as your R. Mine is getting a average of 35 mpg around town and maybe 40+ if I do HWY trips. As an example I can expect to get about 150 miles and when I fill up it takes me about 4.1-4.5 gallons.

Unless you are getting on it I can not see why you are not getting better millage. What i would do is fill your take up to the brim and then see if you can get close to about 150 miles before you have to get gas.

Yes, aftermarket items can effect the millage. Depending on what you do and how you do it your millage can go down or even up. There are many posts on here about gas millage and aftermarket upgrades.

Just changing the exhaust will not effect your millage that much. Some say maybe 5-10% lower that may only be around 2-3 miles per gallon. Now if you use a fuel management device then you might be able to increase your millage a bit. No matter what these bikes should be getting between 35-40 mpg. Now if Honda would have put a 6th gear on these, then we might be seeing MPG's in the 50's. Dont know why they never did this.:spank:

Holly shit Big OZ, you know how to hit it hard. :choppersm I get to 70 and I have to go to 5th because I am afraid to rap it out any more. I wonder how many RPM's you are tapping if you are in 4th at 100 MPH.

my 23 mpg in city driving is based on many trips of 2 miles. the bike is cold when i start and i might not start it again for 3 hours so the engine is cold again. (los angeles temps 50-80F). this 23 mpg has been consistent, meaning each time i added 4.1 gallons, i knew i had travelled roughly 90 miles. those 2 miles trips include idling time at red lights for the first mile. the second mile is a stretch without traffic lights. the bike idles fast until it warms up. so my riding is simiilar to using the choke in colder climates. (my 1200cc honda car would avg 30mpg but when the choke was used in winter the mileage dropped to 24mpg.)

jayboydog - this is making more sense. I get around 37mpg pretty consistently when I've ridden to work and back. That's a 64 mile round trip and most of it on the highway. I have a modified intake and pipes and a Power Commander III. These are all hurting my mileage. My riding style is mostly sane with small burst of uncontrolled throttle now and then.

This whole discussion is interesting but the bottom line to me about gas mileage is:

Ive got non-stock pipes, get mid 30's in town, 40+ on the highway...actually a tad better (1-2 mpg hwy, city is same) with them than with stock. Not sure why. Maybe my throttle hand just calmed down a bit, who knows.

Some have mentioned better mileage with the Bosch 4419 plugs...

BTW, MOST fuel managements systems can only add fuel, which will decrease your mileage...

I was getting 40 mpg completely stock but then I went to a Baron BAK the Cobra angled slash cut exhaust and the Cobra FI2000. That brought me down to the 32 range. Sound and power totally worth the loss in MPG.

After market pipes (most) should give you better mpg That leans it out some, not much but a little. The 1800's run rich form the factory, don't believe me just check your plugs.
Mine ran so rich when I got it I added the Roadhouse classic 2 into 1, K&N ac, and cobra fuel fi2000 fuel manager. The fi2000 only needs too be set a pod 1 1.5-2 pod 2 0 pod 3 0 that should be close.
If you are fueling up on the side stand that will make a big difference.
Question: does you bike have the radiator reservoir under the frame or between the
cylinders?
That will depend on when the bike was made where it is. Thus tell you what size of tank you have.

When doing mpg you do not count the first fuel up, that is the starting point but count the last which is the ending point. if you did add the first fuel up then you got 32.6 mpg

By the way I have a 1300 final on mine and I do not hunt 6th, fuel mileage wen up 2 mpg in the interstate and 3.5 on back roads. I have a c model and can go 125 + miles when the low fuel light comes on. Total holding capacity 4.1 gallons and have gotten 170 miles on a tank many times.
