I have often wondered if the 5th gear can be changed out to a lower gear. It seems that 4th and 5th are so close that if that was done it would lower rpms at highway speeds and eliminate the "need" for 6th gear

What is a 1300R5. I have never seen an r5

I don't see why you couldn't change 5th, make it like overdrive in a car.
I don't know how much Honda swaps out parts on their bikes but I know you can do that on sport bikes

What we need is a Honda tech that knows Hondas inside and out, not a guy who works on them and only knows part #'s.
The big question is what do you change 5th gear to? Gear it to low and your running 60mph at idle.

It is definitely possible. The cost of someone designing a gear might inhibit the job a little.

The main thing is that you have to pull the motor and crack the entire case in half to get at the trans gears. In order to put it back together correctly you would have to deglaze the cylinders, put new rings on, and break in the engine all over again.

The only other way is to take out the studs from the right side of the front cylinder so that when you pull the case apart, you don't have to remove the cylinder. Then you wouldn't have to rebuild the cylinders.

I have done a lot of gearing swaps and sprcket swaps on sport bikes. I think it should be able to be done. We would need to know the size and tooth count of the rth gear and then simply find a replacement the would be a smoother ratio.

Just sayin I think it can be done.

anyone have a schematic for the tranmission? or a spare we can look at ??

Boy, that sure seems like alot of trouble for something that you dont really need.
then you must have never ridden on a 6 speed bike? make a hole lot a difference....

as for the 6th gear original question, perhaps you should check with scootworks, they've made 1500 classic kawi's into belt drive, so perhaps they have some ideas
