I have 500 miles on my vtx1300s. I am coming up on the 600 mile service. Any suggestions on what to ask the dealer when I bring it in. I have no complants or conserns at this time.

:coffee: I don't know what the charge is at your dealer but I would change the oil and filter myself, check other fluids and save the $. Some claim that it is also a good idea to change the final drive oil as there may be a lot of shavings generated during break-in.

First, I think you should have changed the oil and filter 300-400 miles ago. It is not difficult to do this yourself. Change to Mobil MX4T synthetic oil when you hit 2000-3000 miles. It will make a difference! Itoo changed the differential oil, and found lots of metal shavings there, too. fortunately it's not a critical as the engine oil.

Just remember that the scheduled services are not covered warranty. The 600 mile service will probably cost you around $275 with the valve adjustment being the most expensive part of it . If you are good at turning a wrench you may want to start doing these services yourself. They are not really that hard and the money you save can be put towards the chrome fund. You have started a chrome fund haven't you? The only problem you should run into is that these bikes have an thirst for chrome.:icon_twis

Thanks for the info. I had no idea the valves would have to be adjusted this soon or the differencial fluid would have to be changed. My dealer did tell me that the 600 mile service would be at half price. Iguess that would be a good deal?

Yep, valve adjustment is part of the recommended service/maintenance at 600 miles (and I believe at 4k, every 4k or so after that--your owner's manual should have it in there). If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself and their "half price" is truly a half price, then definitely would consider having a dealer do it. For the 600 mile service, you shouldn't be seeing any more than anywhere from $275-$350 for total service in most areas (oil and filter change, checking torque values, clutch/throttle freeplay, valve adjustment) from what I've seen/heard. If a dealer is willing to do it for 1/2 of that price range and you don't do much "wrenching," I'd say go for it. Valve adjustment is the most difficult part of the service, but isn't extremely difficult if you have some minor mechanical skills.

That's high. My 600 mile service (at 1200) cost $120. That included the valve adjustment. (June 2003) The valves NEED to be adjusted on the first service!! They are usually loose after break in and need to be set correctly. After that, they don't adjust on every 4K service. Some are change the oil and filter and check this and that (not too much $$) other scheduled services do more, like change all the fluids, etc. Check the manual or NC Brew's tip page for the required maint. I have found a great mechanic and feel that I could never match his expertise. So, all my service is done for me. I just bolt on goodies and pay the bill.
My bike has always run great. Some others - not so great. Those are usually the ones the guys tried to work on themselves or had mediocre mechanics. I'm not saying not to work on your bike - some guys are just more confident than I am.

I just finished my 600 mile valve adjustment. Things went fine but it is was somewhat more difficult than expected. Only two valves needed changing and they were only .002" tighter than specs. I see a 2nd reason why the pair valve will be going as soon as the factory warranty is finished. It's in the way of adjusting valves.
