Well, after only three days of riding I witnessed something I would prefer to never see again. A friend of mine (his name is Brent) had been talking about some new twisty roads he found at an unfinished subdivision (more like un-started). He was all excited about no longer having any chicken strip left on his tires (he has a Ducati) and he wanted to go ride that area. So, Brent, my roommate, and I headed out. We had just gotten into the subdivision when Brent took a hard left going too fast. He went down and I guess his leg broke the fall of the bike (there were no scratches on the pipes). He broke both the tibia and fibula of his left leg. He will be going into surgery sometime this morning to have his leg repaired. If you would, just keep him in your prayers for a speedy recovery.

Thanks,
Eric

After 3 days experience, I sure hope your not trying to keep up with someone on a Ducati. Downfall of many noobies - riding above their ability trying to "keep up" You can get bit quick, it doesn't take much.

No, absolutely NOT! I was the last one in the pack! I just try to enjoy the ride.

Prayers and well wishes to your friend...your in the right spot in the rear...a safe distance back so you can keep an eye out for whats ahead...my favorite place...other than the front....we've all been joking about which color is the fastest...but..I only play around ..fast...on a straight stretch where we can legally be side by side...probably shouldn't play around at all..but we all do stupid things sometimes....Ride safe !! Imho riding is about individual freedom(duh). I enjoy a group ride but I'm not generally fond of being a rumbling exhaust-sucking pack animal whether at the front, wedged in the middle or playing clean-up in the back.

Maybe it's the rebel in me but I don't prefer someone setting MY pace and pinned in following the sheeple whether above or below my riding abilities. Don't get me wrong, I love the comraderie and social fun but I just prefer to ride off solo on my own horse instead of with the posse. Why fly formation worrying about others when you should be enjoying the ride? :D :choppersm /Off soapbox

Being that I haven't been riding long, I prefer riding with at least one other person right now. That way I know I'll have someone to help out if I get in trouble. Last night was a perfect example. Plus, I do like riding in a group. To each his own...

Sorry Eric and Pat, I went off on a tangent there about flock-riding. I've been an accosted material witness to two mishaps ahead of me( Smokey taking statements, checking my ID/insurance, etc.) that I never saw but I was associated with the pack. If I ran Tail of the Dragon I'd likely be advance scout with the charcoal and tri-tip. :D :patriot:

I suppose it's a reason the Ninja spends more time in the garage than the X. Hope your buddy heals well soon, Strummer.

strummin... hope your buddy heals ok. He'll definitely be in my prayers. Lessons as such, learned on a bike, are usually brutal. I've got a friend that tends to get a bit to much into the throttle for my like'n. I keep telling him that it's dangerous enough out there, why increase the risks? Some forget that we are not like our 4-tired road companions... we're on the "outside" of the metal.

Just a quick update:

Brent had surgery at 2pm yesterday. The surgery took two hours and it consisted of inserting a permanent titanium rod the length of his lower leg. He was in a lot of pain right after the surgery because the doctor could only give him so much medication for the first 30 minutes afterward. I visited him last night and he was heavily medicated. He won't be able to put weight on his leg for 6 weeks. Other than pain and imobilization he's going to be fine.

Thanks, all, for your thoughts and prayers!
-Eric
