I'm running a 1300c with cobra drag pipes and stock air intake: How does decapitating the stock air box compare to putting on a big air kit as far as performance?

Also, when I put the drag pipes on there I rejetted my carb with a dynajet kit (a mistake i think) - would I be able to go back to the stock needle with a different air intake?

I did the decap with the spyder mod. Sucks allot of air. Dont think it compares exactly to a bak but I am happy with it. Allot of members did the same.

Can't give you the exact answers to the jet kit but the guru will answer quickly. I think you could use the jets but go back to the stock needle with shims and scar mod. No need to jet pipes unless you change the air flow.

If you like the look of the stock airbox you can decap it and even drill some holes along the back side of it and have it flow almost just as much as any intake you can buy. (just be sure to drill the holes outside of where the filter seals)
Your correct on the DJ kit not being a good choice but... CharlieD can walk you through what you can do to still make it work for you.

When it comes down to it, Air Intake is a "Looks" thing. You just don't get a ton of power out of it, so don't do it for the power.

If you dig it, cool.. We can assist you with what you choose to put on.

Basically, you're looking at how much restriction you're removing.

The more you remove, the more modification you have to do.

Basic steps are:

SCAR Mod, 1 Shim
SCAR Mod, 2 Shims
Factory Pro Stage 3 Jet Kit

ALL Stock VTX's can use the 1 Shim SCAR Mod. Period.

Do a little something to the stock intake, then 1 Shim SCAR Mod. (Say, K&N Air Filter and a couple holes, Closed Spyker Mod)

Do a little more, 2 Shim SCAR Mod (Say K&N, Decap, and a Few Holes, or an Open Spyker Mod)

Go aftermarket (BAK, Big Sucker, Doug's, Spyker Open with a Decap and Holes) then you're looking at a Jet Kit.

PIPES DONT MATTER. Do not jet a stock bike just because you put pipes on it. This is a Heat Thing that AIR COOLED bikes need. We are Liquid Cooled, and don't have to worry.

But also keep in mind, if you go ahead and get a Factory Pro Stage 3 Kit NOW, that kit will do anything from Stock to as crazy as it gets. So, if you're "just playing a little now" you can Jet and Set the carb for that. Later on, if you go nutso on the intake, you will have the kit to Jet and Set it .

I also Highly Recommend Glen's Permanent A/F Tool ($40). It will keep you from pulling your bike apart again if you dont get the A/F Mix right.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah I'm ok with the looks of the stock airbox, it's just that my bike isn't running perfect. It's a little hesitant in the low end. I thought it was the aftermarket pipes - but as you said Gonzo, all factory VTX's should be modified with the SCAR method. Think that's where I'll start. And definitely like the permanent AF tool. Thanks again for all the info!! I'm sure I'll be back with more questions :)

Forgot to ask - What is the advantage to the PAAR system removal?
