Thanks for this information. I just had a key made at my Local Ace and I checked it out in the ignition. It worked just fine but I didn't even think to check any of the other locks. I better do that before there's a real need for that spare key.

I want to add my thanks as well. Just had some spares made which I should have done sooner, but luckily didn't need one.

I do not understand how so many people seem to lose keys and manuals and all of that kind of stuff so that just about every used vehicle I have ever bought only comes with 1 key and if I am really lucky, the owner's manual.

I'm very thankful for this info. Just had a couple of spares made yesterday at Ace! Does anyone know what blanks to use for Leatherlyke hard saddlebags? We tried to find blanks, but finally gave up.

If you send me a good pic I can take a look and let you know. Otherwise PM me for my address and you can send it to me. It's what i do, I make keys.

Make sure it's not the "mirror" blank that was used. If not, go back and stay at Ace and have them "brush" it for you first then try it out before leaving. You shouldn't be having any issues.

Good write up Cage. Now that everyone has a spare key for their bike, don't throw the spare in the junk drawer at home and hope you can find it later. I have always found a spot on my bikes to hide a spare key, that way I can always get back home if I lose my key. I have only had to brake out the hidden key once, to get home frome a swap meet. Beats the heck out of being stuck 100 miles from home with the spare key in a drawer.

VERY good point and I totally agree. It also helps to exchange keys with a fellow rider when you exchange phone numbers and ICE info, too.

forgot to mention that both keys are the factory honda keys!
That's bogus. Take them in to your dealer. They have to make it right and for free. You can't make a copy of a key that doesn't even work in the first place. The dealer has the info they need to get your keys right.

many dealers don't make keys anymore (or at least the three i visit frequently) because many don't buy the high dollar equipment it takes to make the keys (guy at ace told me the new machine they got in a few weeks ago cost 9grand). some dealers still use the old hand cut method and tell you up front they can't garauntee it will work (yes, the key may be made for the bike but due to cutting styles they can't garauntee it). i use ace hardware in Hartsville for all my keys and have never ever had a problem since using them. prior to ace, i used napa in cheraw with no issues. i have seven keys for my kawi, all made at ace with no issues. the key made a few weeks ago was for a desk drawer. the cutter used two different keys and both worked...

Actually, most Honda dealerships should be able to make a key from the number on the cylinder. They just look it up in their system and as long as it shows that you are the owner of the bike they will make one for you.
This knowledge comes from a funny story what happened to me this last Memorial Day weekend. I went swimming and lost my key and almost ended up stranded 200 miles from home. I was able to contact a Honda dealership that was a 45 minute ride away and they said to bring them the number. I borrowed my brother’s 1300 and raced to get there before they closed. The guy was able to make a key for me but I was glad that I had him make two because one turned out to be a crappy copy and wouldn’t work. Needless to say, whenever I stray too far from home I always keep a spare stashed somewhere.

While I find that the post has a lot of good info, it does not solve my problem -- I lost my ONLY key so now how do I go about getting a replacement. Can I get the key code using the VIN number (from a dealer). I bought the bike used but I think I know where the seller bought the bike.

I agree and the OP is wrong.

"By the way...that number found behind the ignition lock is only the Blank key code, not the actual cut key itself and doesn't really help in getting the key made if you actually have no keys left."

I had a key cut at a Honda dealership using the code (and nothing else) on the side of the ignition lock cylinder.
Got a VTX without keys, removed the ignition lock and went to the dealership with it. Showed them the number on the side of the cylinder (under the chrome cover) and they cut a key which works in all locks of the bike.
