I contacted our local Honda dealer and they recommended a local locksmith, some do not duplicate Honda keys so the Honda dealer should know.
the keys were so inexpensive I had to buy 2 so I could use my debit card and meet the $5.00 minimum.

Ace hardware FTW! I tried home depot, Lowes and Wally world before going to Ace just because it was the furthest and not near any of my regular routes. Nobody could help.
Went to Ace told the kid who didn't look so smart to use the hd74 blank & got 2 keys made @2.89 each. They both work perfectly on all 4 locations. Thank you for this post.

Just bought a '06 1300 a bout a month ago and never thought to try the helmet and fork locks at the time. Only had 1 key and no owners manual when I bought it. Got a couple made at a local locksmith for $6 apiece and worked great in the ignition. After reading your post, tried in in the fork locks. It would turn but not lock the forks. Is there a trick? or am I in trouble. Also where the heck is the helmet lock?

If the fork lock is turning, the key is not your problem. Wiggle the handlebars back and forth a little while continuing to try to turn the key in the fork lock. With bars at full lock, you usually cannot turn the fork lock key all the way. The bars have to be just slightly less then fully turned in order to rotate the key all the way. Also make sure to check the key in the gas cap lock.

Yep, wiggling the handlebars and key got them locked. As far as the helmet lock I do have saddlebags so no need to look any more.
Yeah, bags render the helmet lock pretty worthless. You can remove the helmet lock if you want. Some do this because it can rattle. Others do it so that they can relocate it.

I recently bought my '03 1300, and it had only 1 (non-original) key. My Ilco key says HD74 right on it. After reading this thread, I went to the local Ace and asked them to make a couple of copies. After the guy made the first one, I took it out to the bike to test it, and it didn't work in any of the locks. Neither did the second one. I know the guy who made the keys, and he is a sharp guy, so maybe it is just due to my only key being a copy itself. I would really like an original set of keys, what exactly is there on my bike that would let a Honda dealer or a locksmith make a key that would work?

guy made the first one, it didn't work
That only says - he doesn't know what he's doing.
Hold the copy that works - up to what was made - the cuts have to match.

Or use key file - to make it match.
More than likely scrap now - if the high points were cut down - from original height.
Best to go to the dealer at this point.

I would get estimates from both the dealer (stealer) and a good locksmith. My money says the lock smith will be cheaper than the stealer.

The key code for ALL VTX's, both 1300's & 1800's is stamped into the bottom of the gas cap. Simply open the cap and find the 6 character alpha-numeric code stamped there. The key code will be the last 3 digits, either A, B, C, or D 00-99 as A12, B12, C12, or D12 (the 12 could be anything from 00 thru 99).

There are 2 keyways used (commonly called Left and Right by anybody but a real locksmith, as mentioned above). The determining factor as to which code uses which key is VERY simple. A00-A99 and B00-B99 use HD74 and C00-C99 and D00-D99 use HD75.

Hope this helps somebody.
Is this 6 digit code the same as the one that is on the ignition switch? I spoke with a local locksmith about getting some new keys made, since I don't have an original key, and he told me to bring in the ignition switch and he can make a new set of keys from the code on the switch.

The dealer somewhat local to me should truthfully be called a "Stealership" I was in the area (They are actually about an hour or so from me) and thought I'd pick up an extra key because I only got one key with the bike. The guy I talked to when I went in said they sold the blanks but didn't cut them. He said the blank is $6/$8 and the hardware store down the street would cut it for me. So I made the purchase. The initial price was a bit off as they charged me $22 for the blank. I hated to pay it, but needed a spare so payed the piper and bought the blank.

When I went down to the hardware store they tell me "We carry blanks that work for motorcycles" and they were right. They cut the blank and then cut me another extra as well. Total price was less than $3.
