thinking about ape hangers on my C . will the gas tank have to come off for this to run cables.

I wouldn't think so. You will have to get new/longer cables thogh. On the R/S models, I think 4 inches is about the max you can get for rise without having to replace cables. I'm sure the C models can't be too much different. There's a few members here with apes that can give more insight since I haven't done it yet.

I just put apes on my R. Tank HAS to come off. Unless you have a midget in you tool box that can fish the wires and connect and adjust them. Not to mention, i didnt want to be playing around with my bars and ding the tank. Its not hard to pull off (search it) its well worth just getting it out of the way
