I did the hole-saw mod already. My current set-up is: 60 slow jet, 3 shims on the stock needle, 210 main jet, decaped stock airbox, 2 5/8 out on the A/F. Are the stock pipes enough? Thanks guys!

How is it running? I would have thought that 3 shims was one too many.

I've gone back and forth from stock to aftermarket to stock pipes and I can't say the performance was different. My priority is that my carb is tuned to my liking - no flat spots and it starts and idles perfectly. When I went back to stock pipes I didn't have to change the tuning at all, which wasn't what I expected.

nailed it!

No, they are not. They have been engineered and tuned by Honda for optimal performance.
Simpleman has nailed this one down, we ought to put it on all sites!

Honda spent millions getting the X to run reliabily, with no flat spots, idle well and with little vibration. When these engines are modified, mostly to wake the dead, we give up reliable, effortless preformance and trade it for constant gut wrenching angst and frequent tuning. Oh boy, more of that!

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
Heavily modified stock pipes.
Heavily modified stock breather.
Jet kit.
Better performance than stock.
Better gas mileage than stock, and just as reliable. (42,000+ miles of daily commuting can attest to that.)

Most people don't realize a modified engine can breathe easier create more power and be more efficient. A gas engine is the least efficient out there, a jet is one of the most efficient. Stock motors are built to meet epa requirements not reach there full potenial or anywhere close. You throttle dictates how many miles you get per gallon Stock engines that are run wide open right off the line and thru the gears will get much less than one feathered off the line and the throttle used just enough to get the job done.

You guys are totally out to lunch!! :kidding:...My bike has been modified to perform better, and it' gets better gas mileage...And I haven't had to do any "frequent tuning" in over 3 years now...

I really wish people would stop spouting off about chit they know nothing about...:banghead: You want to keep your bike 100% stock, more power to ya!!...But to say stuff that just isn't true is just misleading other members that don't know any better....:nono:

You took the words right out of my mouth Jerry...

Honda (and every engine manufacturer) have to comply with a bunch of government regulations 1st, with performance further down the ladder....How many top-tier race series do you see running factory stock engines??...I'll answer that for ya, NONE!!...

No you're not lucky...Just smart enough to realize that with some ingenuity and a few $$, ANY engine can be made to perform a little better than stock...
