I own a 04 VTX1300C. It backfires and always has since I purchased it with 5000 miles on it. I now have 13,000 miles. I was informed not to be concerned.... but should I be and what adjustments would correct the problem, if I have one. I was using premium gas and am now using the mid octane.

Had the same problem. Bottom line, do not use the choke unless absolutely necessary, plugs are fouled. Do not ride it like a grandmother, wind it oout a little. It runs rich, so don't baby it. Mine backfired so bad I had it picked up and checked out. No problem since.

I had that problem after I had changed the factory pipes and put on the cobra speedsters, and open air filter. The problem ended up being the pair valve. Once those got blocked off....problem solved. Hope that helps.

Mine is now doing it too..it was all fine after the HKs and I've had the Hyper. That and it's sluggish if I let off after cruising for a bit, kinda surging a bit if I'm going into the wind.

Oh well...one more round with the carb and I hope it's fixed.

Good luck with yours.

:coffee: I don't want to get people on a rant agian, but I would start by running regular gas, higher octane fuels slightly change the firing point of the cyclinder. Then move on to what exhaust you have? :hmm2: The factory setup for the bike relies on a given amount of back pressure. When that is changed the first thing you notice is popping and backfiring. Talk to someone here on the forum that is running the same exhaust and see how they have theirs setup.

Merwin, Agree with what you say, just had V&H bigshots put on and rejetted the carb and put on K&N air. So far so good, biggest complaint is that I'm just a tad sluggish when starting off in first gear or I'm just not used to giving it gas with the increased sound. LOL

You didn't mention what pipes / airbox you have.
If you're stock, I would be looking for an exhaust leak, or small adjustment on the A/F screw.

If you've aftermarket pipes / airbox, then add the PAIR removal to that and more involved carb adjustments.

Oh, and yes.....run 87 for a while. You only need higher if your engine knocks, and then you would try the next grade up.
