My brother has a 1200 harley sport custom. (shoot me later for bringing up a harley question:harder: :spank: ) the engine will be running fine and then start running like crap, and then die. after a few minutes it will fire up and run a couple of miles and do the same thing again. we replaced the coil and still does same thing. could it be electronic ignition?

any help is apreciated and thank you in advance.

Is the 1200 carb'd or FI'd? Either way, sounds like an ignition or fuel delivery problem. Checked all the connections (battery cables, ignition wires, etc., etc.). Checked all vent line/vacuum tube connections (hooked up, lines in good condition and not cracked or pinched)? Pulled the plugs and looked at them? Post back with some answers on this and we'll see what we can figure out.

RR has it right I think. Sounds like a vaporlock. Also check the vent lines. Not sure what year but some older ones vent through the cap.

it only happens when the bike is warm, it is a carb. im prety sure the bike is getting fuel. going down the road it starts to back fire and then die shortly after that. would vapor lock cause the backfire? my brother told me when it quits the coil is not getting power. he's not much of an electrician so i can't be positive thats accurate. everytime it quits i tell him to leave it set so can get a meter on it. he does not like to do that.

Well, coil not getting power I'd check the lead going into the coil and/or replace that. After that, it's got to be a short in the system off the ECM (bad or broken wire) or a faulty connection somewhere. Battery is ok I assume and not just "temporarily" holding a charge (i.e.-bad cell in it)?

:coffee: It does sound like an ecm problem. When this happens how long does he have to wait before it will start agian? Bad grounds on the ignition system can cause the bike to die when warm, but restart after it cools. Check all the grounds especially the one for the ECM Repost

+1 Merwin That sounds dead on. I got some friends that are die hard HD guys/gals, I always laugh when they say there bike isn't working right. But still, I'll do what I can to help any one on a bike out of a jam, even if I am poking fun at them.
