I'm looking at taking the last half of this coming weeks vacation with a bike trip to VA Beach. Was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for lodging around the beach and maybe some places to see. Planning on riding down around Richmond, down to route 460 east to Sufolk and in to the beach that way. The wife and I are hoping the weather will cooperate as it has been a lot of rainy weather in the western part of the state. :patriot:

Several Naval Air Stations down there. Great to lay on the beach during the week and watch the fighter jets and naval helicopters come and go all day long.

You may want to check out the Cape Henry Lighthouse. You can pay a couple bucks and walk the steps to the top of the decommissioned lighthouse. Pretty cool.

As far as lodging, good luck! Not sure what you are going to find last minute at the beach during the summer without being wallet-raped.

Anything you find (if you find anything) is going to be really expensive onthe beach this time of year. There's some hotels back a ways fromt he water that might be a little cheaper. 460 is a good route to take- not so much freeway traffic and a lot of little towns to stop off in for water breaks. Lots of little towns also mean lts of little town cops that are pretty good at hiding, so watch your speed through town (I used to take that route from Va Beach to Petersburg everyday to work and I knew all the hiding spots along the way). PM me if you have any questions on where to go down here. There's some pretty good riding around here and Sandbridge is a nice, much quieter beach if you want to spend some time in the sand.

As stated, you could try and PM Redrum but I think he is leaving Friday morning for West VA for the summer ride up there. I'm about 40 minutes south of Va.Beach (Moyock, NC) just across the state line. I can offer you (and the wife) a place to stay should you want to come down that far and I'll be glad to tour guide you through the Outer Banks if you want to head further south.
If you have base access, there are plenty of bases in the area that you could find lodging at.

We often stay at the Newcastle (12th and Atlantic). Protected parking, on the beach, ocean view.

I was down there 2 years ago to visit little sis. A couple of campgrounds there. One KOA. A big biker bar named Bone Shakers Saloon down the street.

Yeah...as stated...going to West VA on Friday...but if your in town before that PM me and I'll give you my number and we can hook up! If your retired military, check into the Navy Lodges. Dam Neck has a great one. As for lodging on the beach...as stated...the wallet will get majorly stretched at the last min. There may be some places away from the beach (3-5 miles) that might play a little better. As for what to do, if you've never ridden across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel, then this would be great(weather permitting). It's 21 miles long, cost $12 one way and with your receipt on the same day, $5 back. There are alot of roads on the Eastern Shore..and some quaint villages. On our side of the water, there is the Marine Science Museum and Aquarium that is nice...you could ride up to Williamsburg...barely an hr from the beach, and ride the Colonial Parkway...or visit Colonial Williamsburg. Going sound...get in touch with Lamay...You can ride south on Princess Anne Rd through Va Beachs rural area into NC...then take the Currituck Ferry over and maybe meet up with Brandon. The ferry is free. Sandbridge is a nice beach...but as far as a ride...not much...and if it's to windy it will sandblast your tins...Let me know if you have any questions...right now the town is overun with terrorists....uh...I mean Tourists....so there can be lodging found...it's just $$$

Boneshakers has changed hands a few times in the last year or so. It was a biker bar, now it's a sports bar...but still alot of bikes in the lot every day. I guess they had to try and change their image to get more customers. Everyone still thinks of it as a Biker bar. Right up the street is Diesel, and around the corner behind Hooters is Clutch. A small but nice biker bar. Boneshakers has been attracting 1%'ers whereas Clutch...not so many....Still, occasionally I will go to Boneshakers, but mainly Clutch.

This is all Great information, and many thanks for the responses. Looks like I will need to put this trip on hold for awhile, my Dad (87) is going into the hospital Wednesday for some surgury. Not sure how he will get along after he gets home. He lives by himself as Mom (86) is in a nursing home near by. So we will just take some day trips, weather permit, this week and look towards the later part of summer. That may be better as the terriosts(tourists) will be thinning out.
We just returned from a trip up to Weirton, WV /Pittsburg, Pa area this afternoon. Got to take in a Pittsburg Pirates baseball game Sunday!
It was 96 degrees at home when we got here.........not a good temp to be setting in traffic on the bike.
Thanks again! :patriot:

When you decide to make the trip down I am here in Suffolk and can show you around, but I don't know about the best places to stay in VB since I just ride home after visiting.
Some friends where staying at the Holiday Inn on the ocean front over the July 4th weekend and claimed it was very nice and (set up for kid fun) which they liked since they brought their 5 year old daughter.
I would ask any hotel/condo facility as to what the majority of quests they cater too the week of your visit.
I myself would hate to stay in a hotel catered to kids if the trip was meant for a romantic (or adult) get away.
