I have a 05 VTX-1300S. Whenever I'm riding and have to make a short stop like for gas my bike eathier won't start or struggles to start. When the engine is cold though it will fire right up no problems. I thought it might be a battery problem so I took the battery off and put it on a charger for a few days but still have the same problem. I dunno if I need a new stator or what the deal is. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

I don't know anything about what I'm about to say, so take it with a big grain of salt!

You might want to give more info about your bike - mileage, exhaust, intake if not stock, EDIT: and whether the starter turns the engine even if it doesn't start, or if you get no movement of the starter at all.

You may be running rich (hence easier start when cold) - check your plugs and see what they tell you.

Depending on mileage your valves may need adjusting. Don't think this has anything to do with hard starting while hot.

Possibly a broken wire on the Ignition Control Module (unlikely but what the hey).

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what causes this sort of trouble.

Hunnerfeld, I thought that I responded to you earlier, but I guess that I hit the wrong button (that damned old operator error again). ANyway, my bike did the same thing a little while ago. I removed the battery, took it in and had it tested, tested fine. I took it back home, charged it up, and the problem continued. I re-did the ground wire mod, redid all of the connections from the battery to the starter, and it still did it. I was about to pull the starter, when I decided to replace the battery first. I'm very glad that I did, I replaced it, tightened the terminals down (with a wrench, not a screwdriver), and voila, problem solved. Hope that helps bro. Let us know.

Thanks for the advice david ill check all of it today. Im gonna go try and pick up a new battery today and hopefuly that fixes everything.

it a 05 vtx 1300-s 4200 miles vance and hines pipes and jet kit, k&n air filter other than that the bike is stock. The starter does turn but it only turns once or twice then everything dies, i let off the starter and the lights and everything come back on but then ill try to start it again and nothing.

thanks again mad matt i did get your advice, im gonna try it today and hopefully it works ill let ya know if that does it

When mine starts acting this way, it's time for a new battery. I get about 2 years use from a battery. This time I bought a heavy duty battery online. It has worked well so far. It is embarassing if the engine won't turn over after gasing up.
I got 1 year out of the local battery store with their $25 unit. The heavy duty unit cost $65 with free shipping. We will see if the extra cost equals extra life.

Hopefully it is the battery. My wifes bike was doing the same thing. I would pull the battery and charge. It would work fine for a couple of weeks. Then it would'nt want to start after warm up. Ended up being the rectifer. Changed that out problem went away. There's web site called ELECTRO SPORT, that has some very good flow charts to follow to check out the stator and rectifer. All u need is a DVM to do this. Good luck

2007 1300r Charged new battery it will start when cold, went on 40 mile ride and almost did not start at gas station.Cleaned start button still hard to start it was still hot. Charged battery over night started fine in the morning. Every one talks about start/kill switch ordered new one. Interested in regulator testing. I checked battery voltage with meter it went from12.6 to 13.7 when revved up. Has any one had similar problem please reply to silver bear

When you shut the bike down, it gets hotter, and temps go up, and things expand, this is what makes the battery work harder.

Cars do the same think.
Shut your car off when it is hot and leave the key on, you will see the temp. gauge go up.

I use to race cars, and if your engine stops on the track, you more than likely will not get it started.

Sounds to me that the battery is not charging. I would check stator and if no problem then test the rectifier. Wishing you well!
