2003 VTX1300R... bike just stalled for no reason.. has full tank of gas...tried tapping the pump, no go....connected the hose from the pump to the carb directly to the filter from the tube out of the pitcock... stalled again after a bit....removed that tube and just used the tube from the pitcock and pulled it over directly to the carb. seems to be working fine... have to remember to turn off valve when i stop though...

Question - if it's working, why do i need a pump at all? How long will it run the way i have it rigged? I have 350 miles to go before getting home now... can/should i just forgo getting a new pump or do you suggest I get one soon?

thanks!
Joe

Time to dump the pump. Unless we have a stoppage of the Earths core, gravity is all you need. You can even get a vacuum operated petcock if you choose---why you would do that, I do not know. One of the top 10 dumbest inventions ever

what's wrong with that? Isn't that how they all are on the vtx?

On the carbed ones after 2003 they are. What's the point of a having a switchable petcock that won't necessarily turn on unless there is a vacuum to do it. Another needless feature for those who can't remember to turn their gas off if the bike is going to sit for an extended period and something else to stop your engine if a vacuum line comes loose somewhere. I'm sorry if I'm coming off assholish but, I'm smart enough to turn my gas on and off without a vacuum assist.

Makes sense. No worries, not assholish, nothing wrong with an opinion... I was just wondering, I didn't know if some models were different besides the fi vs carb. I always thought it was more of a safety thing, for example if in an accident when the motor cut off, fuel wouldn't continue to flow onto possibly hot pipes causing a fiery death.

the vacuum controlled petcock is a safety thing. and to a lesser degree a reliability thing.

bikes went for 70 years without vacuum controlled petcock...

and NOT a Fire thing...
its to prevent fuel flow past the float and into engine..
example... Honda CBX 6 cylinder..... the most left cylinder would leak fuel into cylinder... start engine .. and bending connecting rod and crankshaft..

I never considered that

This is my first bike with one-unless my Magna had it. I'm just used to turning it on and turning it off. I put Pingels on my last two HD's and never a problem.

Hey! Stop stealing my thread, LOL!!

So what I'm hearing is NO don't replaced the pump, just keep the tube running directly to the carb.... No worries of it causing any major issue unless i forget to turn off petcock for a long time... Okay, thanks! If anyone sees I might have an issue doing that please do let me know.. for now I am pumpless! Frees up more room under seat anyway for all these damn wires to the battery i have, hahaha... Cheers all!

Sorry for the derail but this is derail central. Dump the pump, not needed. Turn the gas off for extended periods or even over night if it makes you feel better.

I used to have a 2003 1300 S, and just like yours, it suddenly quit on me (I was on the highway going 60+ MPH). After a while it started again, and when I got home I removed the pump and just used gravity feed. You can't use the fuel filter with gravity feed, there is not enough force. After a while I bought a 2004 petcock and hooked a vacuum hose to it, for added peace of mind.

You will be just fine without the fuel pump.

NOTE for all about to chime in about fuel filter, the 2003 1300 had an inline cartridge type fuel filter, which worked well with the fuel pump but can't be used with gravity feed.
