Does anyone know how I can tel if the charging system is working in my 2008 VTX 1300R. I replaced the Battery in the begining of the season and today I went out to start it and all I got was Click Click Click. How can I tell if the alrtenator and recipricator are working? also should my cooloing fan run if the key is off? I got off the bike the other day and the fan was running cooling down the bike and I turned the key off and it still ran for about 10 seconds. Just curious.

I'm having the same problem about starting. I have some things to try tonight, I'll post my findings.

Your fan should stop when you turn the key off. Well, at least mine turns off on my 05 S when I turn off the key.

If you have the service manual, the instructions for checking the charging system are on page 16-7.

You can download the manual here...http://www.vtxcafe.com/showthread.php?t=3614

The fan should go off with the key, but you may still here it spinning for a few seconds.

I look at the manual. As far as the fan it actually runs when I turn the key off. Not just spinning. Maybe I have an accessory connected to that fuse and it's jumping off it. I think my voltage meter is connect to that fuse. May be the cause. Not sure. Thaks for the manual info.

On hot days my fan still runs sometimes after I turn off the key. The easiest way to check if your charging system is working if you have a digital readout voltmeter. Check you battery volts with everything off, should be around 12. Start your bike and check again you should be getting a reading around 14 volts when system is charging

Just to make things clear. The fan will continue to run if you kill the bike with the kill switch at the grip, but it should go off with the key.

I found last night that the battery I bought in June is bad. I put my original Yauasa (6 years old) back in the bike and it fired right up. Another forum member chimed in and said he bought the same battery from the same place I did and his went bad in a months as well. This goes to show that new batteries can go bad, too.

I suggest you take your battery to a place that can load test it. Save yourself the hassle of testing this and that and have the battery tested first. They are the weakest link and the easiest to trouble shoot.

Surprised noone has mentioned make sure the cables are tight, NOT with a screwdriver but with a WRENCH!!!! The number one problem when not cranking is loose cables allowing corrosion under the connections, remove, clean and retighten with a wrench; may not work but if it does beats the cost of a new battery.

Do you have any accessories that are not shut off with the key.
As above when you shut it off with the kill the fan will run until it cools down but when you shut it off by the key it should shut off. You should not have anything connected to the fan wires.
