Hey I've been having trouble with cold starts in the morning. When i choke the motorcycle it starts, runs for awhile, floods out, and won't start back up until i pull the gas line, drain it, and then it will start again. Does anyone else have that problem or is it just me? What could cause that to happen and is there an easier way to fix it?:choppersm

1. Pull the plugs. They will be black from using the choke. Clean em or better, replace them.
2. Slap your hand every time you see it going towards the choke ever again. :D Seriously just give the throttle a couple of twists and crank her up.
3. Enjoy your "new" ride.

I've owned several bikes, and ran each and everyone of them in COLD weather....like below freezing. The VTX is the ONLY one I've EVER owned that gets the plugs fouled out using the choke.
I do NOT understand this.
My other current bike is a DR 650, and when it's cold, run it with part choke for..oh, I dunno, a couple of minutes anyway. Do a couple of 'blips', MAYBE even a strong rev, and good to go. Not the VTX...sheesh, don't EVEN think about leaving the choke on for more than 3 or 4 seconds, and I'm not talking FULL choke. The thing just clogs up, and it wont clear.
Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation for this??
Oh, and like others have said, LAY OFF THE CHOKE. :harder:

Ok so I have always had to chock my bike to get it to start. It is a 2006 1300c, after reading this I am under the impression that I will need to replace my plugs now? If that is the case what does everyone recommend for this and where is the easiest place to get them without going to the stealer!

The choke malfunction occurs because the 1300 uses a lean burn system comparable to the lean burn qualities on the Honda cars.( Yes, I know the cars are FI. The effect is the same, tho.)

Why Honda hasn't corrected this little malfunction is as unknown as them not clearing up the rattly engine, clunky shifter or the neck bearing problems.

Once ya learn not to use the choke unless its really cold (and then not a bunch of it) you'll get along well with the bike.

The plugs can be picked up at most auto parts stores and at a lotta Walmarts. Many of us have switched to the Champion RA8HC plugs. Easy to come by.

The 'choke' on the 1300 is not really a choke as you would typically think. It does not cut off air as in a typical choke. What it really is, is an 'enricher', which just dumps more fuel into the mix, having more or less the same end-effect as a choke, being a rich mix.

That's why you shouldn't really use it much or at all.

I've had my X for one year now. When I fist got it I too used the choke. That lasted about two weeks until I read here about the choke problems. I immediately started the 3 twist & fire method. To this day I haven't touched the choke & I've ridden almost all winter. Come out of work in the morning to a temperature of say 30 degrees give her the 3 twists & fire then set the throttle lock while I dress up like the Michelin man and off I go.

I use my choke everyday, as soon as it starts push it halfway in, let it fast idle for 10 seconds or so and off I go.I don't shut the choke all the way off until I turn onto the highway, about 1 mile away. If I try to pull out in fast moving traffic without the choke it stumbles abit. choke on no problems.

.. I used to do the same thing when I first got my X. Choke half way out, spluttering along. then I read all about the enricher in these forums. I got the bike serviced, changed the plugs, and have not touched the choke since then (I have a nice decorative cover over it now!)

Like the others here say.... a couple of twists and start er up... never stumbles, smooth as silk.

For the last couple of months or so I have just pumped the trottle a few times and it starts. I have to rev it a little at first but works fine. When I used the choke all the time I can't say I had any pbl's. I have a friend who had a hd panhead and to start it you pumped the trottle twice, kicked the kicker through twice, turned on the switch and then kick started it. If it wasn't done in that order it wouldn't start

Had this problem when I first got it. Choke is evil on the VTX and will foul the plugs every time. In the winter have the mechanic enrich the air/fuel mix a little and lean it up in the summer. Do like the other guys say twist the throttle grip a once or twice before you start and let the thing warm up a few minutes in winter.

I used the choke the first week I had my new bike. Noticed motor started to stumble at low speeds. I almost took the bike back to the dealer for warranty work on the carb. Read about the choke problems on this forum. I discontinued using the choke, took about a 40 mile highway trip. Seems to have cleaned up the fouling plugs and now the low speed stumble is gone. Thanks VTX CAFE!
