Has anyone had their engine fins diamond cut? I am thinking about getting this done.

Many of us - including myself have sanded and Polished the fins to a chrome look. It is a PITA but the results are very good and really stand out - Especially if you paint your engine Black too!.
As for "Diamond Cutting" Seems like alot of trouble to remove the engine and Heads when simply sanding and polishing will give the same or better look!
As for affecting cooling - Absolutely no change!

The cuts increase surface area and in theory cool better.

Years ago a friend bought a bike that had it done, it looked very good up close but 10' away you couldn't even see it. I have no clue what the cost would be, but I'd say if that's what you want go for it...

Actually, being that our bikes are liquid cooled, it won't make one bit of difference....

Hey Chief, went to look at your gallery to see what the heads look like....damn....everyone should take a minute and check that gallery out!!! Oh, the heads really look great too. To paint the engine like that, I guess it has to come out of the bike? That's not something I could do....not if I ever wanted to actually ride the bike again anyway.

The only reason Honda put the fins on hte engine is so it will LOOK like a HD engine. Liquid cooled doesn't need fins. If you take them off the engine looks very strange in a motorcycle.

I tend to agree that the vtx doesnt "need" the fins, and that diamond cutting would only be cosmetic, but the fins do tend to cool the engine simply by being there. I read somewhere that they actually account for a certain percentage of the cooling, but I dont know if I beleive it.

Ocean - I only painted the Upper Fins. They come right off with a few bolts. Here is a thread on how to do it. THe Pictures suck in the thread and dont give it justice. I also like just liked painting the Uppers (I polished all the fins) as it gives a good contrast in the engine for my Taste.

I have diamond etched heads on my 1800 and it is way sexier than just a painted and polished lip. That's just my 2 cents.
