has anyone tried the clayton root mod on the 1800 c stock pipes. ive heard it works well on the 1300's. im happy with the look of my stock pipes just thought it would be nice to have a bit more sound coming out of them.

thanks for any input

Would still like to know who has drilled pipes on 1800s. brother in law did it on 1300 and its not the same set up. after removing tip, not as much room to drill and doesnt look even remotely the same as end of 1300
anybody??

I drilled 5 or 6, 1/2 inch diameter holes in each pipe after removing the tips. So with the tip back on it didn't appeared drilled. It was louder and I liked it at first, but after riding for a week I realized that the tone was wrong ... sort of tinny. I then did what I should have done in the frst place, and replaced the stock pipes with Cobra Slash slip-ons. It wasn't the first time I've tried drilling baffles in stock pipes, and I've never found the result satisying. Maybe this time I finally learned! I guess for me it boils down to the old adage, "You get what you pay for".

Should of added ... If you are going to drill, remove the tip. On my Retro the inner plate was angled so you have to use a very small bit to make starter holes first. Make sure your larger (final) bit is long ... you will need to penetrate the initial angled plate, about four inches of dead air, and then an inner plate.

i drilled 4 holes 1, 3, 6, 9 oclock. i drilled through front plate and then through the baffle. i didnt cut the end plate off but am considering it. did you notice any diff after cutting off end plate? seems like plate is hindering sound.

FYI, the baffle has 2 plates seperated by about 5inches. IMO if you go through one, you might as well go through both. Or you could just rip those puppies out and bore out the tail pipe. This sounds really good.

there are 2 baffles inside the pipe. One just behind that black face plate and the other a few inches back. Im talking about the black face plate that shows on the very end of the tip. If you remove the tip, that plate is still there, mounted to the exhaust. didnt really seem like a baffle, rather just there for looks. My question has anybody, after taking of the chrome tip, cut this piece off. I originally drilled holes in only this plate and found little if any differ. It wasnt until after i took tip off and drilled into the baffle i got some sound. The sound seems a bit muted and wondering if cutting off that piece might make a differ.

When I drilled my pipes years ago, I experimented with the size and number of holes. You can drill a few, test the sound, then enlarge them or add more to suit your taste.

'Course you can't easily go back, so make sure before you drill them.

Good day VTX'ers....I have a '02 1800C (single OEM end pipe) and love the looks of the stock pipes (I got rid of the the cobra dragsters - poorer quality - easily chaffed chrome - than Honda's OEM pipes). I also now solely depend on Honda's ECU to control my emission system.

What I did....
1. Removed the chrome tip.
2. I burned a couple calories and cut off the two pipes with a hack saw (including the extended cap - I thought visible holes near the end of the pipe would look tacky).
3. I put four 1/2 in holes around the pipe - and not near the 3 mounting points for the chrome tip.
4. Painted the visible area with >500 degree engine paint (black).
5. Reattached everything - waited overnight.

Well, the sound is somewhat the same in style, but certainly has a louder, seemingly richer sound.

My bike also seems to have a bit more giddy-up in taking off.

Before any other holes or other exhaust-related mods, I will spend a few miles digesting what I just (irreversibly) did to my bike.....

What say you?

Respectfully,

Thats interesting. Its the exact same way I did it (minus the paint).
Ya, its got more growl, but yet........
My brother in law did his 1300 first. No comparison. He got the sound out of the 1300 that I, and I suspect you, were looking for. I think he drilled a few more holes but I knew that no amount of holes was going to give my 1800 the same results. If I had it to do over again, prob. not. I'm considering trying a set of slip ons but only put 200 miles on it this season, so I guess no rush.

That is funny....

I too was expecting more of an open and deeper growl. Didn't happen...

I also still have the popping while in deceleration. (I have seen other 1800 posts which said they had no popping). I do not have a rejetting kit, and really am not interested in getting one...I guess that is an issue with stock VTX's ? (anyone want to correct me on that one)

I also found out that when I am high rpm, (I would imagine in excess of 5000+) I lose power in a big way...Now I don't ride at that rpm, and certainly don't race the VTX, but I am not happy with this result. In retrospect, I should have done more research to help me make a calculated decision whether to drill or not to drill...

Regarding slip ons, I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and another 02 1800C stopped by my rest stop. His exhaust looked stock, but he said his final exhaust (two-in-one section) was actually a slip on. He was very satisfied with it. Had I not been brain fried from extensive riding that day, I should have asked him what brand the slip-on was. One thing for sure, the quality of Honda's pipes are excellent.

I did a lot of investigating before I did mine, so did my brother in law with his 1300. I also got to see how his came out before doing mine.
Regretfully with diff. results. I don't however have a loss of power at 5k rpm. I can't say that I get on mine often enough to notice the difference.
It did seem to have some extra giddi up on the start but it might just be the sound. What I do miss is that low throated roar it had prior to drilling when you got into high rpms. I'm thinking about selling mine since I don't ride all that often but if I keep it, I will make a change. Prob slip ons.
