Now I have the dreaded cupping on the left side of the front tire. I plan on replacing the stock Dunlops with Avon Venoms (AM41, AM42). How well do the Avons wear compared to Metzeler ME880 tires?

All the tires I have run wore more on the left. Dunlop, Metzler, and Avons.
Just the way it is.
I don't believe that rattlebars site.

Cupping, however - I've not had that on any of the three. Metz and Avon were run at 40 PSI. Wore very well except for the left wear (I consider that normal for these bikes)

Just put Metzler 880 on the Bike. The tires are so mch better than Dunlop. I had the same ware on the lef side of the tire. Was told it could be Air Presser. But do not belive that to be a fact. Only got 6000 miles out the the Dunlops. Replace the back at the same time.
