Any MIL codes???
Any aftermarket items like a Power Commander???
What about an aftermarket air filter???
How about year and model????
Coolant system level, you check at the radiator cap under the tank. You can lift the tank up some and place a 2x4 to hold it in place.
You could have a full coolant recovery tank and no coolant in the engine.

Would no/ low coolant in the engine lead to over-heated pistons dragging or seizing while in motion, or as was described, running like a 100CC moped?

It should be making some noise if piston was scraping.
He has a Power Commander, the TPS wire could be chewed up.
I only mentioned coolant because the fill level is at the radiator cap.

I have a feeling the soot on your plugs are a symptom of your main issue. Soot may have built up in the exhaust and be clogging it. Too much back pressure in the exhaust system can cause the problems you describe.Try removing the mufflers and checking for obstructions, and then run your bike without the mufflers and see if that helps. But if it does, you need to find out where the soot is coming from. My guess would be bad injectors, but it could be a number of things, such as a bad throttle position sensor, or even a faulty PAIR solonoid. but check the exhaust system first.

Cool thoughts. It doesn't sound like it was anything that built up over time or you would have noticed lesser symptoms earlier. Something went bad fast, like the coils oukerry1 noted, a piece of crap clogged your carb main jet, or a wire gone bad. Troubleshooting sux. Let us know how it goes.

Oops! 1800. Belay the carb comment and insert injector comment.
