After buying two already made motorcycle sound systems (shark and a no name), and being dissapointed in the quality and sound producing level, I decided to make my own. All said and done it cost me just under $100.00 and it is super loud, at half volume. Here is what I did and the products I used.
1. 2 - 6" chrome off road lights - from Harbor freight and Tools - $20.00
2. 2 - 5 1/4" 3-way speakers from Walmart - $25.00
3. 16 gauge speaker wire, and black wire protector - $10.00
4. 500w mini amp form Ebay - $35.00
5. Fork mount brackets, and 2" hex bolts
6. Velcro
7. Black full face speaker grill - $10.00 local audio store

I started by removing the light from the chrome housing and pushing through new speaker wire connecting it to the speaker. I then placed the speaker and grill inside the light housing rubber, which fit perfect. I reattached the light clamps, and the speaker was installed. I then removed the bolt that the lights came with and replaced it with a 2" x 1/4 bolt, to fit the fork bracket (Memphis Shades Windshield brackets). I then mounted the speakers on the forks, and tightened down the bolts. I then covered the speaker wire with the black wire cover and ran the wires to the tool box under the seat, where the amp fit perfect. The amp had an out for a MP3 wire, which I ran to the top of my tank hidden under the gauge housing, where I can connect my phone or ipod. I connected the power to the amp to the ignition, and connected all my wires. WOW!!!! so loud, and looked really cool. I have had the bike at 75mph and the sound is crystal clear at only half volume. Full volume is crazy loud, no distortion at all! I have a few pics and more are to come. Hope this helps someone. Feel free to ask questions. God Bless!

Outstanding! Great job; I was never one to listen to tunes on a bike however your setup might change my mind. :)

This is really cool. Nothing like a design and build in the home garage in my opinion.

I'd love to see and hear it. :patriot::mosh:

How about those photos??? Curious to see what kind of brackets you used to mount the speakers and how it all looks. Is the volume control on the ipod the only control basically? Just power in to the amp and speakers out? Great idea.

Thanks for posting.
I have been wanting to do a mod like this for a while, since I saw a Harley in a mag with speakers mounted in a couple of small headlight buckets on the crash bars.
Now lets see the pics!
