Hey Guys, The tuning post I've read here from some trusted members always say that you start with the main jet when tuning. I don't recall if any said how you can tell when you have the "best" main jet and not just a main jet that's working well. Do you just keep trying main jets and keep notes on each or is there another way? I'm up to a 210 now-60 slow, stock needle w/3 shims and de-capped air box. Thanks!:stirpot:

The best main is the one that pulls the best at high rpm full throttle and can be up to 2 sizes larger than the bike can use.

for your air box that would be the 210 or maybe a 215.

keep trying larger main jets until the highest top speed is achieved and use that one. i just got my tune done and ended up with a 225 main jet. tried the 230 main and top speed dropped a little.

It can depend on your driving. I still believe on spark plug color.
plug color is dependent on the needle position and if you let idle the A/F screw setting not the size of the main.

Just to make some noise----

"Best" is such a fun word.

Really all depends on what ya figger on doing with yer bike for the 'best' main.

When I was getting into terrorizing the 1800 riders (oh, and about anyone else I could torment), with the mods I had on my bike, the FP225 was the best jet.

Then I did a rather long trip thru the mountains. That 'best' jet really suuuuucked. It was sad. Really sad. Couple of the Ohio guys got to take a look at what was left of the sooted, shrapnelled remains of my baffles after that trip. And it sounded funny, too.

Did a FP200 on another mountainous sojourn. Bike was absolutely fantastic in the mountains. That was the 'best' for that higher altitude riding. Of course when I came back to flatland and didn't change the jetting for a few weeks the local guys took advantage of suddenly being able to whup my posteranious. They gloated plenty. I did get even.

Then I did finally settle down and went with a FP 215. That was the 'best' for the way my bike was set up for general go anywhere, do anything riding. Altitude, rodding around, jist a cruisin'.

It's entirely possible to tune yerself into the 'best' limited situation. Then there's the rest of the time yer ridin'.

Just thought I'd mention it all.

the guys have already answered, so i'll just chime in to say you are very correct...if you try it your way, it can work, but if you have problems ask and it can work better...
