hey im new to the forum as a member but have been around boards looking in the past. to start off i have a 2006 vtx 1800 c. general altimax hp 206 60 16. riley exhaust mod leaving the cat intact but gutting the rest. block off plates and lightening performance foot control extenders and a few other mods that are for appearance. my question is this. im wanting to change out my stock air filter but not sure what to go with. i dont want to get a power commander but im looking into doing one of these.
1. keeping the stock box and putting a k&n filter
or
2. getting spike intake

again i dont want to get a power commander so do i need one for either of these and keep in mind i have gutted my stock c pipe leaving the cat only the rest is a hollow cannon. so any help would be great thanks alot ill post pics of my bike soon as well.

The only difference between the two options is looks. What do you want it to look like? The Spike may give a HP or two. Probably more with a fuel chip.

Welcome from Tennessee and wishing you a super great day. :patriot: Sorry I can't help you with the 1800 as I drive the 1300.

Every bike runs a little differently than the next. These VTX's have personality. After I did the PAIR mod and put on a kury hyper charger the bike was performing fine but running VERY lean. I added the PCIII a few months ago to richen it up a bit and couldn't be happier.
My advice would be to go ahead and change your intake to whatever you want but also put in new plugs at the same time. After a few hundred miles compare them with your old plugs and look for any differences. Richer , leaner or about the same. Then decide on a fuel manager after that. I know some guys do all sorts of exhaust and intake mods on these 1800's and never have any issues but some dont and need a little help from a fuel manager. I've got the PCIII USB but I understand that cobra has a new autotuner available for the VTX that I've heard good things about. A little pricey but the one's I've heard using it have had very positive reviews.

I have an 2007 1800T with Road Burner drag pro longs and Kury Hypercharger Pro-R and no Power Commander. The bike runs great. Lots of power and I get about 40 mpg. Hawkvtx is right, if you've done the pair and opened up the pipes, try a more open intake and then check the plugs. The plugs will tell you if you're too lean. If so, check the 1800 parts for sale forum for a Power Commander, just make sure that it's for your year and model of bike. Often time a Power Commander will need to be dino'd by someone who knows what their doing to set it up for your bike, if not it may run like crap and only get 30 mpg.
