K&N / carb / spyker question

1149 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Elder
I just ordered a K&N filter for my 09 VTX R and I was wondering if its necessary to adjust the carb or do I just simply install and thats it? Im also considering the spyker modification and would like opinons / advice on whether its a good idea and will adding the spyker mean a carb adjustment.
As always, advice is greatly appreciated.

With just a K&N filter swap, you shouldn't need any adjustment, but you could benefit by adjusting the air/fuel mixture screw out a bit to richen it up, as these bike are known for being lean from the factory. If you do this it is best to get one of Glen's permanent A/F adjusters and install it and then you won't have to take it apart again just to make an adjustment.

If you go with Spykers kit you can get away with doing the scar mod.
I decapitated my airbox and then did Spykers cover mod, so I went with a factory pro jet kit.

Here is a link to the Scar mod. However don't cut the factory spring down.

I already have the permanent A/F screw installed and I have it set at 2 1/2 turns out.
How difficult is it to do the scar mod, is it something you need to be a mechanic to tackle?
It's pretty straight forward. Since you have the permanent a/f screw it's even easier.
You will basically just be pulling the diaphram cover off the carb, and adding a washer or two to shim the needle up.
If you don't want to get into it and only want Spykers cover for the looks, you can just block off the back of Spykers grill. Then you won't need to change anything in the carb.
