You can drop it into the stock airbox no problem, but since you're taking more air in it will probably lean your A/F mixture out enough where you may need to adjust the A/F screw out a little to richen the mixture (not hard to do at all). You will probably also benefit from adding a shim under the needle; check out the thread on Carb Tuning for the 1300X in the Upgrades/Modifications section of the forum on how to do that. You'll be taking in a lot more air/letting more out with your drilled stock pipes. You should notice a nice little performance/power gain doing this.

Good luck, let us know if you have any other questions.

What is the best thing to do for performance? k & n and some new pipes...mabey 5-6 hp? just want a little more umph!!! not allot but just some more...
The HK sideburner makes the best HP as far as any pipe I've seen. 3 MAX HP over stock. As ibified said don't expect much with the K&N a single HP would be doing a good job. The Baron's BIG AIR is said to make a little more power than the rest as far as intake systems go. I have'nt had one so I can't say for sure. Retro Rich would be a good one to ask about this intake system. But don't get all tore up about not making killer numbers in the HP dept. 5 HP on a bike is a boat load. GG :D :choppersm

+1 GG & ibi; you won't get as much with a drop-in K&N in the stock airbox--it's more restrictive than aftermarket airboxes. My recc. would be to go with the Baron's BAK (I'm biased toward it though, since it's what I have), an Ultraflow or Thunder (such as the Teardrop, Hurricane, Tornado, etc.). I think that the Baron's BAK is the best "bang for the buck" out there since it comes with everything you need (high quality aftermarket airbox that already has the cranckcase breather hookup built into it, Stage III jet kit with a "d" tool for adjusting the A/F, K&N element, PAIR valve block off plates, rain cover). You can sell the DJ kit if you want and just add some shims to the needle (read the thread on 1300 Carb Tuning in the Upgrades/Mods. section of this forum before you get into the carb--got some great tips in there) and use your stock Main and Pilot jet (that's what I ended up with); just make sure to keep the "d" tool for future use or at leat take your A/F screw out and slot it before you let go of the "d" tool so you can make future adjustments. The other thing I like about the BAK is the way it fits in between the cylinder jugs and is less obtrusive than the stock airbox.

Most of the aftermarket pipe set-ups are good as well; less restrictive. My final recc. to you out of all the above--go with the look you want on airbox and pipes--there is not a ton of difference between any of them in re: the final h.p./torque changes. But, changing out your airbox and pipes is something you'll feel on the "butt dyno."

I run the K&N. Also have Scar's nod, 2 shim version.Run various modified pipes.I did have to modify the airbox, drilled about 30 holes on the invisible top and rear side of the box.( Toward rear of the bike, not rear of the box. Gotta keep away from feeding engine heat in there.) Difference? OH YEAH.
